Read Nothing but Trouble after Midnight Page 15

Back inside the house, Rob leaned on the arm of the couch, and I plopped down next to Grandpa. He examined the ring on my hand. “It looks nice on you, Chloe.”

  “Thanks, Grandpa.”

Josh sat on the other side of his grandfather and glanced over at me. “Yep, that’s the ring that means so many things.”

My father scooted to the edge of the other couch and gave Rob an eye-narrowing look. “And just so we’re clear on this, I don’t want to see it on her other hand any time soon.”

“I guess a summer wedding is out of the question then?”

I frowned at my boyfriend, but my father decided to play along. “Well, do we have to invite the entire Callahan clan?”

“Yeah, think of the bar tab alone,” Brad said, gesturing toward the collection of Guinness bottles on the coffee table. “Maybe you should write another book, Dad.”

“Yeah, how about Preston’s Principles for the Father of the Bride?” Grandpa added, eliciting hearty laughter from the room.

I slumped back against the couch and folded my arms, wishing we were showing off my ring to the women in the house. I glanced up at the moms; they were getting lunch ready in the kitchen. “I think they need my help in there,” I said.

Jake gave Rob a slap on the back. “Now, that’s a good woman, Cous. She already knows her place in the house.”

I got off the couch and turned my head slightly. “And do you really wonder why you don’t have a girlfriend, Jake.” My comment elicited a couple of low ooh’s from the room as I traipsed into the kitchen.
