Colby gradually found his way back to consciousness. His head and chest were heavy. He tried to lift up, but could not budge. It was impossible to move. His muscles simply refused to react to the commands his brain was now screaming. He felt something soft against his face and realized that he was on the floor. The room was dark and his vision was heavily blurred.
“Help,” he tried to yell, but no more than a huff left his lips. That’s when he realized the most obvious detail. This isn’t my floor, he thought. This isn’t MY bedroom!
His face was buried in a pale, blue carpet. He managed to turn his head to one side and he scanned the dark room for Keira. She was standing over a wooden crib in the center of the room. A small, white light glowed from inside the baby bed. He blinked his eyes, trying to force himself awake. This couldn’t be real.
He tried again to shout out to Keira. This time he mustered a low grunt. Keira raised her head at the sound. In a single movement, she reached down to her feet and turned. She spotted Colby and seemed surprised, but turned back to the crib and lifted an infant wrapped in a blanket from it. The soft light highlighted her black hair and made her appear dreamlike. She held the babe for a few moments, ignoring Colby’s muted pleas for help. The white light dimmed. When the room was completely dark, she carefully placed the infant back into the crib and took a step backward.
Colby felt the wind again. He could see a nearby shelf lined with books, untouched by the force, standing perfectly still. Strange, but it seemed that this wind was centered on just him. No, it was centered on her. With a twirling motion, it picked up speed quickly.
Keira reached out to him. “Hurry, grab my hand!”
He drew enough strength to thrust his right hand toward her. She snatched it and pulled him to her with one hand. He draped his arms around her limply as he attempted to stand on his own. “You’re okay, I’ve got you,” she shouted to him as the wind started to pull on them. He focused his blurred eyes on her. Her face was absolutely glowing and her hair lifted into the vortex of the wind. The vibrant red light overtook them and everything went black…again.
