In loving memory of Nana, our Johanna, who lived a life full of adventure.
Bunnie Comes Home
This is the very important story of how Bunnie and Johanna met. It will only be truly understood by children who still believe in all things magical and those of us that do not let wonder leave with our childhood. Only the children and those who have their eyes and hearts open will understand how one little stuffed bunny and her friend can keep the wonder alive for all of us.
Bunnie was made in a factory in Mexico, or China, or somewhere far away from Johanna’s home. Bunnie was never sure where she was made, nor did she really care. All Bunnie knew was that she was pretty and had the cutest little pink dress to wear. It did not matter to Bunnie that there were hundreds of other bunnies that looked exactly like her, because she knew she was special.
The bunnies made in this factory were made for the special purpose of being Easter presents for children all over the world. The bunnies were excited, trying to guess where they might go. One bunny hoped to go to Hawaii, another to England.
Bunnie did not care where she ended up as long as there was someone there to love her and play with her. Oh, and feed her yummy candy, of course. As everyone knows, bunnies like candy.
As Easter approached, the excitement for the bunnies was almost too much for them to stand. They were all hopping around and talking at the same time.
Soon the head bunny boss came into the factory to talk to the bunnies. She told them that they would be put on pretty Easter baskets and sent all over the world. She explained that when they were put on the baskets they would be put into a magical sleep and would wake up when their new owners took them off the baskets to play with them Easter morning.
Then the bunnies were put on their pretty Easter baskets, put into a deep magical sleep, packed in boxes and sent all over the world.
Bunnie didn’t know where she was going. She was in a wonderful deep sleep and was dreaming about candy. While she was dreaming, a nice man picked Bunnie and her basket as a present for Johanna, his little girl. The nice man had no idea what he was getting into...
The nice man took Bunnie and her basket home and added lots of good treats to the basket and set Bunnie and the basket on the table so that it would be a surprise for Johanna in the morning.
The next morning was Easter morning and Bunnie was still in her magical sleep. She was on her pretty basket on the kitchen table, waiting to be a surprise.
All of a sudden Johanna came roaring around the corner and was so excited to see her Easter basket. Johanna grabbed the basket and saw that it had a cute bunny on it. She loved little bunnies and thought this was the cutest little bunny she had ever seen.
Before the nice man could stop her she grabbed a pair of scissors and cut the string holding Bunnie’s paws to the basket. Just as the nice man was saying that he didn’t think the bunny was supposed to come off the basket, Bunnie woke up and looked around...
Bunnie looked at Johanna and said that her name was Bunnie. Johanna told Bunnie her name and asked Bunnie if she wanted to go play together and eat some candy.
Of course, this was an offer Bunnie could not refuse. These were her two favorite things in the world, playing and eating candy. Johanna, with Bunnie firmly in tow, rushed out of the room to go play and eat candy.
Now, one might think that the nice man would be puzzled by Johanna’s behavior talking to a stuffed little bunny, but he wasn’t. Here is a secret that no one has ever known.
The nice smiling man could also see that Bunnie was real. He decided that if he ever told anyone, they would think he was crazy, so he never did. This is why I said earlier that the nice smiling man had no idea what he was getting into when he brought this little bunny into his and his daughter’s life.
Just then, Bunnie came sliding around the corner and informed the nice smiling man that both she and Johanna were ready for breakfast and asked what the nice man would be making. Life would never be the same again...
The End Beginning
Bunnie Goes to the Museum
One bright, sunny, warm summer day Bunnie and Johanna were looking for something to do. They had watched their favorite cartoons. They had played their favorite games. They had even played outside watching the birds and butterflies and prairie dogs across the street.
They came in the house and started to ask Johanna’s daddy about all the animals they had seen. They asked questions about the birds. They asked questions about the butterflies. They asked questions about the prairie dogs.
Mr. Johanna (Bunnie thought this was the name of Johanna’s daddy) thought that they had too many questions and decided to take them both on a trip.
Bunnie and Johanna loved to go on trips. They got really excited and were trying to decide what clothes and shoes to wear when they remembered that he had not told them where they were going.
So, when they got in the car, they started to beg and plead to be told where they were going. Mr. Johanna would only say that it was a surprise and reminded them to stay in their seats and put on their seat belts.
As they drove, Johanna peeked up out of the car windows. Bunnie was too small and could not see so she took off her seat belt and started to hop on the seat to look out. Bunnie would bounce and look out the window for a second and talk real fast about what she was seeing. Then she would bounce off the seat again and look.
Mr. Johanna told Bunnie to sit down and put her seat belt back on. Bunnie knew she was supposed to wear her seat belt whenever she was in the car but she was just too excited.
Bunnie kept bouncing and did not think she needed to sit down and put her seat belt on. She was too excited. Soon the car turned onto another street just as Bunnie was jumping up on the seat to see what was going on.
As she jumped, the car turned and Bunnie bounced into the window and bumped her little nose on the window glass. Bunnie landed back on the seat. Bunnie realized that she had better put her seat belt on and be safe or she would not be able to have fun wherever they were going.
Finally, the car stopped in a big parking lot and Johanna and Bunnie jumped out of the car. They knew that they had to hold hands in a parking lot and soon all were holding hands and skipping up to the big building but they still were not sure where they were.
As they were going in, to their surprise Johanna’s daddy asked her where her shoes were. Like many little girls, Johanna didn’t usually like wearing shoes so she had kicked them off in the car. They went back to the car to get her shoes and then they were ready to go again.
Soon they were close enough to realize that they were at a big museum. They saw a big planet and learned about where they lived. They learned about the oceans and the land. They saw lots of animals and learned about all the animals that lived around their home. They also learned about animals from all over the world.
Bunnie got so excited that she decided she wanted to see how some of the animals felt so she hopped over one of the rails. A nice lady that worked at the museum came over and told Bunnie that the exhibits were to look at and be learned about but not to be touched. She showed her the areas where Bunnie could play games and touch things. Bunnie said she was sorry and that she would be good and only look at the rest of the exhibits.
In the art gallery, they looked at pictures people had painte
d of animals all over the world. There were some sculptures there too and some of them were bigger than they were! Bunnie and Johanna loved looking at the pictures and sculptures. When they were done looking at the pictures they had to go back again because Johanna had lost one of her shoes in the art gallery.
By this time, Bunnie and Johanna were very hungry and needed a snack. They went to a restaurant that had a huge fish tank in it. Bunnie and Johanna ate their yummy snacks and watched the fish swim.
They were having a great time watching the fish when Mr. Johanna asked if they were ready for their last surprise. Oh, boy! They jumped up and down and said they were ready.
Then they went to a big theater to watch a movie about more animals. Bunnie and Johanna were excited and sat in the big seats eating popcorn and drinking their drinks and watched the movie.
All day they learned about the world and animals and had so much fun. On the walk back to the car they talked about how much they saw and what they did and, of course, since they were in a parking lot they held hands to be safe.
In the car, they both put their seat belts on. Bunnie made sure hers was on nice and tight because she did not want to bounce into the window again. Soon they were both asleep and dreaming about their next visit to the museum.
