"Would you like a danish?" Mattie searched through the brown bag for her favorite snack as they listened to the Beatles song, Something, over the radio, They'd been on the road a couple of hours now, and the sun was up, and it was a glorious morning.
"Maybe we can split one." Clay smiled at her as he kept an eye on the road. They'd already seen several unfortunate deer on the side of the road.
Mattie split open the cellophane, and tore off a section of the danish, and he tilted his face over toward her so she could pop it in his mouth. She tore a bit off for herself, and noticed, as she chewed that they were losing the radio signal. She wiped her sticky fingers on her napkin, and reached over to find a new station. After a few moments of searching, the sounds of Ben E. King filled the air, as Stand By Me came through loud and clear. She turned up the volume and they hummed along.
Clay mouthed the words to her, bobbing his head softly as she hummed, and she smiled at him as she chewed a bite of danish. He glanced at her and lifted his eyebrows, and to her surprise, started singing along in a deep baritone.
She stared at him in amazement as he nodded his head at her to the drum beat and grinned. She marveled at his very decent voice as he continued singing, making amusing faces at her at appropriate verses to make her laugh.
He raised his eyebrows at her playfully, and she moved her shoulders to the beat and joined in and they smiled as they sang along to the song together.
They laughed as they finished the song, and Mattie glanced over at Clay, a smile on her face and in her eyes as she gazed at his handsome profile. He turned and his broad smile made her sigh with pure joy. If his appealing and infectious earnestness in belting out that song didn't make her want to spend the rest of her life with him, she didn't know what could.
