Read Port of Shadows Page 40

  Few of the original Ten survived that battle.

  But what of Tides Elba? The real, original, ginger-haired Tides Elba who came and went and in no reasonable man’s mind could have been an actual avatar of Mischievous Rain?

  Clearly, Tides Elba did not participate in the Ghost Country campaign, nor would she be mentioned again, under that name, in any recorded recollection of the Lady’s empire. She ceased to be, disappeared. Perhaps she and all the copy girls, of whichever sort, joined the cat Ankou and the twins when they went wherever they went, never to be heard from again. Perhaps Buzzard Neck Tesch accompanied them. He was heard from no more forever as well.

  The granite castle remains, damaged, empty, its fields gone feral. No one lives there anymore.

  * * *

  The most reliable information about the late empire is not reliable at all. It, too, is consensus guesswork woven from untrustworthy fragmentary records and hand-me-down oral histories. The memory problems suffered by the Black Company were not unique to them. The Company was just most intensely targeted. Nowhere in the Annals captured after Queen’s Bridge is there any mention of the Company’s time in Aloe. There is a grand blank there, and it spans almost four full years.

  Bottom line, someone in the Tower felt existentially threatened by something hidden in plain sight within the record of the everyday facts of the Black Company’s Aloen sojourn. Certainly they tied up loose ends by the hundred.

  * * *

  So, weigh what has been recovered, consider the sources, form your conclusions, then come to the discussion prepared to argue.
