Read Reformation - Part 1:Psychic Knights Page 11

The Savage Mind made its final approach to Jornaer a day and a half later. It was heading for the North of the planet to the city of Jorn, the very first city of the modern era to be completed. Technology was its attraction. Everything was geared around pleasure and the service of the inhabitants. If they didn't want to, the Jornaerns didn't have to move a muscle to get from one place to the next. They could be transported from one side of the city to the other without moving a limb. They just had to think it and the mechanical Personal Aid that each Jornaern had would move them.

The whole city was connected through a series of neural links that in turn connected to each PA. The Jornaerns had to just link up and they could be anywhere they wanted to be and do anything they wanted to do. There was only a small percentage of Jornaerns that would stay in this city for long periods. Some had been there for most of their lives and their bodies were in no condition to be able to withstand the effort of moving unaided. Generally it was a city for a break.

Ifor's employer had arranged to take possession of the relic here. She was based on the east side and as the Savage Mind came in to land, an uneasy feely grew within the two men.

"Something’s not quite right," Thorn said. "We've had no request for clearance codes."

The Savage Mind gently settled on the landing pad. Here was a secluded area that had a hang up from the first settlers. A wealthy area that distinguished itself from any other place on Jornaer by being available only to those that were deemed to be worthy. A self appointed committee would determine the fate of any prospective tenant.

This area of the city was secluded from the rest. Set aside for the powerful and influential of Jornaer. It covered around ten acres and was the epitome of excess. Though the cities on Jornaer were equal in their wealth, because Jorn was the first, it suffered from a misguided feeling of self-importance. Exclusivity not only holidayed here, it was the law.

Thorn and Ifor alighted from the ship with Thorn carrying the relic in its container. The strange power that emanated from it was too much for Ifor and Thorn seemed to be more in control over its pull now. As a precaution both men were dressed in battle gear. Thorn in his long coat with gun holstered inside it. Ifor wore the Jornaern battle dress of shoulder, arm, chest and leg guards with his gun holstered to his right hand side.

They entered the greeting area where they expected to be met by a greeter. Nothing. It was quiet. Deathly quiet. Both men stopped at a Holo-Map that filled the far wall. Ifor studied it.

"There's something wrong. There's no sign of anyone here. This map should be bustling with the movement of everyone in this area. It just looks as though the place is empty."

Thorn reached out with his mind and confirmed what Ifor had said.

"Are you sure this was where you were supposed to meet?"

"As sure as I'm standing here. Something's very wrong." Ifor looked around the room. It was domed and rose to a height of thirty metres. He noticed something on one of the walls that ran up and along the domed ceiling. He took a closer look. Markings, just like the symbols on the rock they had just come from, meandered their way across the wall.

"Does this look familiar to you?"

  Thorn looked and nodded.

"If what happened here is connected with the relic, we'd better keep an eye out for those creatures." He turned to Ifor. "Are you sure you don't know what that things for?"

"No, I swear! As far as I'm concerned it's just another religious piece of junk. Like so many they seem to treasure."

  "Let's take a look around."

Both of them moved off cautiously. Occasionally Thorn would make a quick search ahead with his mind, never finding anyone or any more signs of the creatures. They came to a large set of doors that led into a meeting area for the inhabitants. It had been filled with trees and plants and gently burbling streams. Tranquillity captured for all that had now been devastated by a brutal, destructive force.

"What the hell happened here?" said Thorn. The resulting carnage was as though a hurricane had been let loose and amongst this destruction pools of blood covered fleshless Jornaern bones. No plant, no cobble had been left unturned.

"I think it's time we left," said Ifor.

  "I make you right."

  The End.
