PARTMENT

  Richard slams on the door.

  SUPER

  You deaf?

  RICHARD

  Where is she?

  SUPER

  Where's who?

Richard slams the door again. It opens. A YOUNG MOTHER holding a SCREAMING BABY answers. Richard pushes past her, enters the apartment.

  INSIDE

The furnishings are completely different. No Chan.

  YOUNG MOTHER

Motherfuck! Get the hell out of my house!

The super grabs Richard. Richard takes off.

  INT. ALBERT'S HOME - DAY

Albert opens the front door. Richard's on the other side. He's carrying his coat under his arm. He's sopped in sweat.

INT. LIBRARY, ALBERT'S HOME - DAY

Albert sits behind his desk, Richard in front. Albert examines the package of photos.

  ALBERT

  Is this it?

  Richard nods.

  ALBERT

  There's no ransom note.

  RICHARD

  She doesn't want money.

  ALBERT

  Who else has seen these?

  RICHARD

  Just you.

  ALBERT

You haven't shown them to the police?

  RICHARD

I can't go to the police.

  ALBERT

So, they don't know Steven's been kidnapped?

  RICHARD

  They think he's just missing.

  Albert's stunned.

  ALBERT

Richard, this is an F.B.I. matter now.

  RICHARD

The first thing the F.B.I. would do is contact the authorities here. You understand?

Albert leans back, takes this in. He nods slowly.

  ALBERT

  What can I do?

Richard points to the historical photos on the desk.

  RICHARD

I need to figure out what these are, what they mean.

  ALBERT

Can't help you there. Maybe the History Department at Tulane.

  RICHARD

And I need to see the Crescent City files. Can you get me into the D.A.'s archives?

  ALBERT

I still have some pull down there. I'll see what I can do.

  (picks up the photos)

Can I make copies of these?

EXT. FRONT PORCH, ALBERT'S HOME - DAY

  Albert sees Richard out.

  ALBERT

I'll call you when I know something. Wait a minute.

Albert disappears inside, retrieves Richard's coat.

  ALBERT

  You almost forgot this.

  RICHARD

  Thanks, Albert.

  ALBERT

If she doesn't want money, what does she want?

  RICHARD

  Atonement.
