washed over Sabrina, and she surveyed the bed sheet, looking back at him with bemusement.
“I know what you’re thinking of,” David said.
“You can read me like a book, dangerous man,” Sabrina said, her eyes wild with passion.
“Want to know what I’m wearing underneath?” David said.
“Yes, DC,” Sabrina said.
“Well, have a look; I’m sure you’ll like what you see,” David said sensually.
Sabrina grinned at David, and slowly lifted the bed sheet. Upon uncovering David, she was surprised by what she witnessed.
“Oh my, I can’t believe you remembered!” Sabrina said, eyes large with wonder. Sabrina saw that David was wearing the multi-colored pair of track pants he wore the first time they met. She thought he had disposed of them long ago, as he never wore them afterwards, as they were, now, hopelessly out of fashion.
“Yes, I’ve kept them all these years as a remembrance of our initial meeting that day when we were students. It’s amazing, I can still fit into them - just,” David marveled, looking down at them, and then back at Sabrina, his brown eyes as cheeky as ever.
“It’s as if a day hasn’t gone by since we first met. You spilled milkshake all over me in the canteen, and I said that a man with track pants with a zillion colors on them did that to me,” Sabrina said, with a laugh. “Thankfully your taste is much better since you married me,” Sabrina said, as David grimaced at her comment.
“Yeah, that’s a moment in history we’ll never forget, but for all the right reasons,” David said.
“Yes, for all the right reasons,” Sabrina said, with a nod.
David and Sabrina looked at each other. They were unhappy that they had become distant from each other after so many happy years of marriage, and could not believe that this happened to them. They had witnessed many of their friends divorce and remarry, or just stay single, but never thought this could happen to them. On the other hand, they were grateful that they had never, ever crossed the line with other people, despite several temptations over time.
“You know, Sabrina and David, or Brina and DC, still has a ring to it,” David said, as Sabrina smiled, becoming thoughtful.
“I want to ask you something DC, and please let it all out,” Sabrina said.
“Ask away,” David said.
“How did we ever get to this point? I was thinking of splitting from you, but I don’t know why,” Sabrina said.
David took a while to respond, his eyes off yonder, but he tipped his hat at her.
“I feel the same way,” David said. “I think…we just weren’t thinking carefully.”
“You too - so it’s not only me,” Sabrina said.
David shook his head, and let out a huge sigh.
“I think maybe we were using work as a way of evading each other, which wasn’t necessary in the first place,” David said.
“I’m with you,” Sabrina said, using her hand to indicate that she agreed wholeheartedly with David. “We were arguing over minor stuff, such as where we put the pepper in the cupboard, that it became a farce.”
“Yeah, a sign of battiness if there ever was,” David said. “Who gives a damn where the salt goes, as long as we can find it in the end.”
Sabrina became suddenly quiet, and David watched her.
“What is it Brina?” David said.
“I just thought of something else - maybe this was eating away at us subconsciously,” Sabrina said.
“What?”
Sabrina sat even closer to David, and touched him on the arm.
“Could it be because the kids are now gone, and we had forgotten how to communicate, as we had them to care for, but now they’re not around, those little habits of ours were blown out of proportion?” Sabrina said.
David looked away from Sabrina, and was in reflective mode for a moment. Yes, the loss of the kids took something away from their marriage, but maybe they had taken it too heavily. They loved their children, but they would be back after finishing college. While they were both independent-minded, they were good kids who loved their parents, and David and Sabrina did the best they could to give them a good life. David looked back at Sabrina, and smiled.
“Yes, all the above, but apart from that, we forgot to be grateful for all the little things - work is definitely not everything, as we have proved,” David said.
“Well, it seems as if I’ve been railroaded out of work - Dale dismissed me today, and said that I can take as much time as I need away until I feel right to come back,” Sabrina said.
“Smart man,” David said, with a nod. “He could spot a lady on the verge of going mad, and wanted to protect himself from an unhinged woman, and the harm it would cause his business.”
“DC!” Sabrina said.
“Well, they said the same to me at work - either it’s our way, or the highway. Take a holiday, get some fresh air, before you lose it completely,” David said with a wide smile.
“Looks like we have some people who care for us, as they saw we weren’t taking care of ourselves, or each other,” Sabrina said.
“Yeah, sometimes other people do know the score,” David said.
With this, David proceeded to take off the tie he was wearing, and tossed it over on the floor, to Sabrina’s surprise.
“Why did you do that?” Sabrina asked.
“Well, I’m getting in the mood to ditch work for a while, and doesn’t that say it any clearer?” David said. “No more tie, no more responsibility…at least for a while. Doesn’t the hat indicate a screamingly obvious need for fun?”
“So that’s why you’re wearing it,” Sabrina said, her mouth open in surprise. “Touché cowboy,” Sabrina said, with a naughty smile, winking at David.
“I have something else for you,” David said, as Sabrina looked on in eagerness.
“Another surprise? You know how I love those DC,” Sabrina said.
David put his hand under the sheet, and pulled out a matching hat for Sabrina. He passed it to her, which she took from him with great enthusiasm.
“Now we’re equal hat-bearers,” David said.
“I love it DC!” Sabrina squealed, as she placed the hat on her head. “Does it look good on me?”
“You look great - why did we never think of this before?” David said, as Sabrina arose from the bed, and viewed herself in the vanity mirror.
“Yes, let’s take them all on, cowboy!” Sabrina said, adjusting her hat, and the cord attached.
“I’m ready when you are honey,” David said casually, adjusting his own hat.
After a minute of masquerading in front of the mirror, Sabrina sat back down on the bed, still gushing from their escapades. After their fun, David paused, and looked at his wedding band, and then over at Sabrina’s. She was confused by his actions, and watched him in suspense.
“What is it DC?”
“Do something for me honey,” David said.
“What DC?”
“If you take off your ring, I’ll take off mine,” David said.
“Why David?” Sabrina said.
“You’ll see,” David said. David removed his wedding band, as did Sabrina. She waited for him to begin. “Now give me your ring, and I’ll give you mine.” He took her ring, and held it with his fingers, as she looked on in awe. “I, David James Casey, also known as DC, pledge to never let anything take away from my marriage to my beloved, delectable wife Sabrina ever again, as long as I Iive, and that the next twenty-four years of our lives, and beyond, will be even better than the last twenty-four.” David placed the ring on her finger, and she began to cry.
“How sweet,” Sabrina said, removing a handkerchief from her jacket pocket, and drying her tears. After a minute, Sabrina regained her poise, taking David’s ring in her fingers, her hands trembling slightly, smiling at him amongst the tears.
“And I, Sabrina Casey, also known as Brina, will never again think the worst of myself, my husband, and my marriage, and will always remember that I’m marr
ied to the most handsome, alluring man on this earth. And yes, I can’t wait for the next twenty-four years, and more,” Sabrina said, as she slipped the ring on David’s finger, and they embraced. It had been months since they had this kind of contact, and their separation from each other had felt like forever. Sabrina let her tears run free, and David stroked her hair, as they stayed in each other’s arms for a spell. David also shed tears of joy at their reunion, and bit his bottom lip. He remembered something at this point, and pulled away from Sabrina.
“What is it DC?” Sabrina said.
David looked over at the laptop on the table near the window, and back at Sabrina.
“We have a holiday to plan,” David said. “We can go outside our home to have a break, or, we can have it here. We can have picnics in the living room, buffet breakfasts in the kitchen…whatever our heart desires.”
Sabrina nodded, and smiled at David. It was as if they really were starting all over again, and today signaled a new beginning for them.
“Yes, whatever we will do, we’ll do it together, like everything else we’ll do from now on, and forever,” Sabrina said, as David watched her in his loving way.
