caught it mid-flight and in one motion turned the sharp end into the incapacitated zombie’s heart.
Then all was quiet on the street in front of Pastor Erik’s church.
Some months later, back in Boston at the shop on Charter Street, Tripp's Imports & Antiquities, Gordon was reading the daily Minnesota Pioneer, which Seamus had subscribed to when they had returned to St. Paul after their long trip west. His frozen foot had eventually thawed and he had had a great story to write in his journal while on the train.
Word had filtered back east, eventually, that the town of Nininger had dried up and blown off the map when the livestock had died off and the spring planting had failed.
A curse, some called it, for defying a dark witch.
But in the relentless boom of expansion, where one town on the prairie disappeared another three appeared from nothing, including one called Kensington. Gordon read that Scandinavian farmers there were talking about finding a runestone that spoke of the region’s Viking past.
“Nothing we didn’t already know,” said Seamus, reading the story over Gordon’s shoulder. “The more we move forward in this world, the more tempting it is to look back on what’s passed.”
