towards the elevator.

The cop watched him go. For a few moments he entertained the idea of following and giving him a whop or two with the night-stick anyway. Just so he’d have a little memento, something to remind him that you don’t fuck with the Man. But instead he crouched down and examined the wreckage of Leonard’s telescope.

He was looking at the eyepiece, turning it over and over in his hands, when something made him look up.’Hey!’ he shouted, alarmed and surprised at what he saw, ‘What the fuck you doing there boy?’

Leonard had walked past the elevator shaft and was standing, facing him, on the very edge of the roof. His long pale face looked white and waxy in the reflected light of the night-sun but his eyes looked bright and alive. As the cop watched, seemingly frozen to the spot, Leonard raised one bloody hand in a gesture of salutation, then he simply leant backwards and toppled over the edge. Gone.

Leonard fell backwards through the inky black night. He was in free-fall, his body weightless, no longer bound by the laws of gravity. Above him he saw the Milky Way arching magnificently across the sky and the myriad stars burning with their cold hard light. For one brief exhilarating exultant moment he felt at one with the cosmos, he felt he knew the mind of God.

Then he plunged into the clouds.
