“Well, it seems that Blanket. Inc is a place for fresh starts.” Smiled Rachel. “I mean some people come here straight from a variety of jobs. Acting and model work, for example… or even street cleaning.” Miss Clair squirmed in her seat a little. “So I guess its fair to say that I have every right to be here off the back of an underwhelming CV. It’s a fresh start.”
Okay, so perhaps it wasn’t the perfect answer, deliberately jabbing at your interviewer, but it was a solid start. She had shown interest in researching the company beforehand and she had opened up with a strong pitch nonetheless.
“So what can you bring here that say, another candidate can’t, Miss Groves?”
Rachel took a short moment to lick the sides of her mouth, which had begun to dry with nerves.
“Firstly, my organisation skills are second to none. I’ve helped managers reorganise rotas and even helped in the rehiring process after a sacking or redundancy amid a restructure. As you can see I’ve also never been fired so unlike a lot of people in this job market, I’m always considered a reliable and important component in the cog that is any business machine. And unlike a large number of people, I’m punctual; which you have seen today by me being here on-time for this interview, even though I took the rather unreliable form of public transport.”
Bang. She used her love of talking to her advantage and now the interviewer was on the back foot. It seems like miss Clair had underestimated the persuasive powers of Miss Groves.
The interview continued onto this tit-for-tat game of questions and excellent answers until the very end, where Miss Clair, tired of Rachel’s nonsense asked this very simple question; “You’ve had a 10 year absence from work. What have you been doing in this time?”
The question was not any sort of trick and by all means, it wasn’t entirely incorrect. Yes, Rachel had been working in the last 10 years, but none of it was through official channels that she would put onto her CV.
Rachel looked up at her interviewer then her eyes drifted to the window behind. She observed the darkened patches of soot on the buildings in the background and she took a deep breath then smiled. “I’ve been finding myself. Soul searching.”
Miss Clair looked confused. Confused as to why it would take someone ten years of doing nothing to then find themselves. How lost does someone have to be to take ten years to find themselves again?
By now Clair had no choice but to write her approval of the interview so far, all Rachel had to do was answer the last question. “Do you have any prior criminal convictions?”
Rachel paused. Then stopped completely.
“Miss Groves?”
“Uh-ah-“ She stammered, fixing her dress and unfolding her legs. I agree that it’s a nervous question, but it only ever warrants a yes or no answer. “Yes.”
“Have you served time in the last five years?”
“Yes.”
“What for?”
“Murder.”
