Glossary of Terms Used in this Short Story:
Aesir – the tribal name for half of the Gods of Asgård
Allfather – another name for Odin
Angrboda – the name of Loki’s second wife. Her name means brooding angst. In some stories, she’s his lover while married to Sigyn. She is the mother of Fenris, Jörgmungandr, and Hela
Asgård – the highest point in the Nine Realms and where the Asa dwell
Asgårdian – the name of those who call Asgård home
Baldur – son of Odin and Frigga. Known as Baldur the Bright and Baldur the Beautiful. Slain by a mistletoe dart. Married to Nanna
Bifrost – the rainbow bridge that connects the Nine Realms
Bragi – another son of Odin. The God of Poetry. Married to Idunna
Einherjar – Odin’s half of the glorious dead. They dwell in Valhalla
Fárbauti – the father of Loki. Not much is known about him.
Fenris – the eldest son of Loki and Angrboda. The Dire Wolf of dire wolves. Destined to face against Odin in the Ragnarök and devour him whole.
Frey – prince of the Vanir and a resident of Asgård. Twin brother to Freya. Destined to face the fire giant, Surt, at the Ragnarök
Freya – Goddess of Battle and one of the most beautiful goddesses in the Norse pantheon. Many have tried to trick their way into marriage with her. She and Odin divide those who have fallen in battle amongst them and gets first pick.
Frigga – the wife of Odin, seer of men’s fates but keeps their fortunes to herself. She carries a distaff as a weapon and weaves tapestries with the knowledge from the Norns
Gerda – the wife of Frey
Glüt – the first wife of Loki. She bore him twin daughters. Not much is known about this particular union.
Gungnir – famed spear of Odin. Never misses its mark and is engrave with runes
Heimdall – the gatekeeper of the Bifrost
Hela – the daughter of Loki and Angrboda, queen of the inglorious dead. She rules over Helheim
Hod – son of Odin and Frigga, twin brother to Baldur. He was born blind and was the one to throw the mistletoe dart that killed his sibling, all under Loki’s direction. Some stories claim he was jealous of his twin’s marriage to the Goddess Nanna
Huginn – one of Odin’s ravens. Name means Memory
Idunna – keeper of the golden apples for the Gods. Without the apples, they grow old and feeble-minded
Jörgmungandr – the Midgård Serpent and the second son of Loki and Angrboda. Poisonous and the doom of Thor, God of Thunder
Jötnar – another name for Jötun, or a frost giant/ice giant
Jötun – someone from Jötunheim
Jötunheim – one of the Nine Realms and home of the frost giants.
Laufey – the mother of Loki. Not much is known about her except that she bore two other sons by Fárbauti. Loki was conceived in a fit of rage when Fárbauti struck her with a bolt of fire and/or lightning
Loki – God of Mischief, Chaos, Fire, and the Hearth. Married to Glüt, Angrboda, and Sigyn. Father of Fenris, Jörgmungandr, and Hela, and mother to the eight-legged steed, Sleipnir after turning into a mare. Trickster and shapeshifter.
Magni – son of Thor with his mistress, Járnsaxa. Destined to survive the Ragnarök by being tucked away in the branches of Yggdrasil
Mjolnir – the hammer of Thor and feared by frost giants
Modi – son of Thor with his mistress, Járnsaxa, and twin to Magni. Also destined to survive the Ragnarök
Naglfar – the ship Loki commands at the Ragnarök. It’s made from human finger and toenails.
Nanna – the wife of Baldur
Narvi – also known as Nari or Narfi. Son of Loki and Sigyn. Twin brother is Váli. Slain by the Gods after Loki let slip, in a drunken rage, his role in the death of Baldur. His entrails were used to bind Loki in a cave until the Ragnarök
Norns, the – the three sisters similar to the Greek Fates. Their names are Urd (past) Verdandi (present), and Skuld (future). They weave the fates of the men and gods alike but do not cut the cords. They observe patterns to make predictions.
Odin – the Allfather of Asgård, the God of War, Wisdom, and Words. Spent nine days and nine nights hanging on Yggdrasil in order to gain the runes. Sacrificed his right eye to the Well of Mimir in order to gain wisdom. Father of the Gods of Asgård, husband to Frigga, and blood brother to Loki
Ragnarök, the – the end of the Gods, the final battle between the Aesir and forces of Jötunheim
Seidr – pronounced “seeth”. Norse term for magic.
Sif – Goddess of Agriculture and wife of Thor. Bore him a daughter
Sigyn – third wife of Loki and the mother of the twins Narvi and Váli. Goddess of the Home. Later became known as the Goddess of Devotion since she would not leave Loki after learning of his crimes.
Sleipnir – the son of Loki through a magical, shapeshifting union and the steed of Odin. Sleipnir is the only horse who can traverse to Helheim and back
Skadi – a frost giantess turned goddess by Odin after the death of her father, Thiazi. Was first married to Njörd, god of the sea, but eventually divorced. Married Ullr. She is the Goddess of Skiing and Hunting. She placed a venomous serpent over Loki’s head once he’d been imprisoned in a cave by the Gods.
Skuld – the youngest of the Norns
Surt – fire giant destined to face against Frey in the Ragnarök and to set the Nine Realms ablaze with the Vanir prince’s magical sword. From Muspelheim
Thiazi – a frost giant who desired the golden apples of the Gods. Coerced Loki into bringing Idunna to him
Thor – the God of Thunder, the wielder of Mjölnir. Husband to the corn goddess, Sif. The doom of the Midgård Serpent, Jörgmungandr
Urd – the oldest of the Norns
Verdandi – the middle Norn
Well of Mimir – famed well said to grant those who drink its waters wisdom but one must agree to a sacrifice first, if they’ve managed to defeat its guardian in a game of wisdom
Yggdrasil – the World Tree that connects the Nine Realms together. An ash
