“Go,” she waved them downward toward the portal. “Get away from the dome, it is going to explode. Follow the dolphins!”
The children dove down to the now opened portal. They all flooded into the first room, the lieutenant closed the door. Five minutes later the children were swimming outside. When the two seal divers emerged from the pool, they could see the surrounding ocean. The children were swimming away with a dolphin on either side of them.
“Are we doing the right thing?” turning to Henri who had drawn her close to him. Her lover kissed her lightly on the forehead.
“They would be killed if the FIUE gets ahold of them. The kids don’t deserve to die because some humans made a mistake!” The two soldiers walked back to the front room. Henri sat at the desk playing with the computer that hadn’t even been shut down. “According to the letters the doctor was writing, he experimented on them for the XIL corporation. The fuel company wanted humans that could live underwater and mine oceans that are rich in atonium. The universe can’t do without its atonium-powered spatial Jumps - the XIL corporation can’t do without its immense profits.” Bitterness rang in Henri’s song. “Dr. Marlo Hoose took human embryos and used fish DNA to create the children we saw.”
“Bastards!” Liri shouted it. “How could they do that?”
“XIL paid him handsomely but something went horribly wrong. It seems contact with the children caused regular humans to get a disease. The last entry is a week ago. Dr. Marlo died, as did Mari and Patsie wrote this as she was dying.” Henri took a deep breath. “The head of the facility panicked. He evacuated everyone and they are going to blow up the evidence. Can you imagine how much XIL would be liable for if they didn’t cover it up?”
“So we are going to die, no matter what?” she grabbed onto his arm. “We’ve been in contact with the children.”
“Yes, Cheri.” He looked at his watch, “we have less than five minutes before the dome goes.”
“We have just enough time to get a file to Mel. The world needs to know what they did!” Liri brought up a chair next to him as Henri began typing.
“The fools never disconnected the cell connection. Never mind Mel, this message and the files are going to The Cassie Chronicle. What’s the name of that reporter who interviewed you last month?”
“Miat Holmes.” She saw him type the name and press the send button. They heard a huge cracking noise. “It’s begun,” Henri sang. “The children are now free to create a new world for themselves in this vast ocean, Cheri.”
“Yes,” she kissed him lightly as the explosion hit. “Yes.”
