When he was between 14 and 18 months, I began sitting with my son and watching the Sesame Street videos on counting and saying the ABC’s. We would spend an hour a day singing with the critters on the DVD’s. By 18 months, he could say all the ABC’s in random order and count to twenty. I had flash cards that I would use with him and test him on the various letters and numbers. I thought this was a phenomenal achievement.
One day his aunt was babysitting him. She found the flash cards and started showing them to him. When we got home that evening she wanted to show us how smart he was. She taught him the abc’s in one afternoon.
Mom Doesn't Go Fishing With Dad Anymore
My whole family used to go fishing with dad. Mom would pack a picnic basket and we would make a day of it. We would play in the woods above the riverbank under mom's watchful eye while dad caught lunch -- or maybe dinner.
This was a fun family outing that unfortunately came to a screeching halt on THAT day!
I remember it like it was yesterday... we had gotten there very early and Dad was teaching my older brother to fish while mom sat on a big old tree stump a little bit away from him JUST IN CASE.
We had been there for several hours. Mom fed us some biscuits and ham for a snack. My brother had caught his first fish. I had run up nearby to watch as he proudly reeled the fish in. Dad was helping him get the hook loose, and mom had called me over to her because she said I was too close to the river and might fall in.
I was watching my brother and pouting because I was not big enough to sit on the bank and fish yet. Mom called me back over to her yet again because I was getting too close to the bank and as I was moving back toward my mom, IT HAPPENED!
I happened to notice movement down near mom's feet, and paused to look. A brightly colored snake was coming out from under the tree stump where mom was sitting. The stump was maybe 2 feet across and she was sitting well back on it, relaxed. Her feet spread about 2 feet apart. She was wearing a long plaid skirt that came down to just above her ankles. The snake slithered slowly out between her feet and headed toward the edge of the bank.
"Look, a snake," I said, pointing in her general direction. "It's pretty! What kind is it?"
"Where" she asked, looking to her left, wondering where it might be.
"No right there, coming out of the stump!" I clarified.
She looked down and I imagine from her perspective she saw this snake sliding out of the stump right between her legs. She made a funny sound and I heard dad yell "Don't move honey! Don't anyone move! Do not scare him. He’s headed toward the water."
We all froze and the snake slowly slithered down the bank and into the water, ignoring us all. Mom sat perfectly still as the snakes tail came into view and followed the rest of him down the bank and into the water. He then proceeded to swim away down the river.
There was absolute silence for another five, maybe 10 seconds and then Mom materialized standing atop the stump screaming at the top of her lungs. I swear, one instant she was sitting there on the stump, the next second she was standing atop it, and I never saw her move!
"Come get me off of here!" she screamed at Dad. "Oh my. God! Oh my, God! I sat there for two hours with him under there! Come get me NOW! There may be more of them under there!"
Dad of course came and lifted her down and carried her several feet away from the stump where she wanted down. A few minutes later, she was demanding we pack up and go home. On the way home mom went thru the what if's (someone had been bitten) and Dad as usual did not have much to say, although he grimaced and grunted occasionally...
After that, mom did not go fishing with dad ever again. Nor were we kids allowed to go with him either until we were much, much older.
That is the story of why Mom stopped going fishing with Dad.
Watching The Buffalo
There is a Buffalo preserve near where I lived at one time.
My then spouse and I went to see them. We drove around the road provided for viewing the buffalo but could not see a single buffalo. We circled around the area several times to no avail.
It was nearing sundown and we decided to swing around once more before going home.
We were partway around the loop when a single huge buffalo came out of the bushes and stood in the road a hundred feet ahead of us. We stopped, waiting for him to finish crossing the road. A truck and a couple of other cars came up behind us.
Suddenly, an entire herd of buffalo came out of the bushes and began crossing the road all around us. There must have been forty of fifty of them.
I do not know if you have ever seen a buffalo up close and personal, but having done so, I have great respect for the Indians that hunted them from horseback.
The buffalo took their time crossing the road. One of them started using our back bumper for a scratching post. Another circled around and peered into the car on the driver’s side. His shoulder topped the roof of our car. His appeared to be the size of a dinner plate. In short, he was huge.
While his buddy scratched himself on the rear bumper, the one beside me decided that the hood of the car was excellent for scratching his chin. He laid his head on the hood and started rubbing it back and forth. Naturally, the car was rocking as if you would not believe from all the personal attention it was getting.
A couple occupied the truck behind us. They had a dog chained in the bed of the truck that was barking at the big bad buffalo.
The woman sitting on the passenger side rolled her window down to take a picture of the buffalo standing outside her window. When she took the picture, the buffalo took exception to the camera flash and tried to stick his head in the truck window. The woman appeared to materialize in the drivers lap, screaming very loud. This annoyed the buffalo. He tried to stick his head through the passenger window again, which caused the truck to rock violently. This set the dog in back to barking even louder. Another buffalo stuck his head over the truck bed and glared at the dog.
Of course, my partner was gripping the dash and whimpering, trying not to scream.
This went on for maybe fifteen minutes and then one by one the buffalo turned and finished crossing the road. I put the car in gear and we headed home.
We had a good time watching the buffalo.
