Saundra had a plan: wait for the county or state to make their move when the clock ran down. Once they arrived, we would present the audio, let their experts adjust it, blah fucking blah. . . You ever drive through Texas? It’s big as hell. Tango could be dead by the time the cops made it to Dumass.

I agreed wholeheartedly with her lame-ass plan, then, while she was talking to the state police in one of her extraordinary personas, I gathered the irresponsible teenagers on the other side of the parking lot.

“What we need is a distraction.” Juicy pursed her lips in a way that reminded me of Tango. “And I think I can handle that department.” Remember? She was his ex-girlfriend.

“I’m going in to see if she’s there.” I said it so directly no one questioned me.

“Me too.” Farmer-C tried to sound just as direct, but folks kind of hemmed and hawed. “What? Am I too dumb to help? If things go bad, you’ll need a strong guy.”

Woody shot me a wicked glance.

I smacked Farmer-C’s arm. “Dude, let go of the dumb baggage. You were the one who figured out where she might be. That makes you smarter than all of us.” I think I shocked him. “Me and Farmer-C go in while Juicy does stuff to distract Warren, stuff that I never want to know about.”

Juicy did a fist bump with Cosita. “You know that’s right.”

Ew in thirty-one flavors. I mean. . . Officer Friendly?

  Just. . . ew.

  Ew.

Saundra had her plan. We had ours.
