David adjusted his binoculars. In the garage, Fox stripped off his shirt, pulled on gloves and went at the punching bag again. Loud music destroyed the peaceful morning. Inconsiderate prick. The noise was helpful, though, as David slipped out of the bushes, across the street and around the side of the house. He hurried through the gate across the backyard and made his way into the kitchen. He’d been in the house a dozen times already. Macarena Davis was known to hand out leftovers from her restaurant to the local single men, as long as they returned her dishes promptly.

The room at the top of the stairs screamed teenage boy. Clothes littered the floor, half-unpacked boxes stacked up against one wall. A pile of gold trophies filled one corner. David slid one arm under the bed and attached a mic. He tucked a small cloth bag into the frame at the head: bladderwrack, anise, lemon verbena and mustard seed.

Ouch! A static spark hit him as he touched the metal frame.

The naked chick had promised it would ruin the big city guy’s mojo. Promised. And she sent him video of her with her toys, too.

David didn’t know if curses worked, but she’d guaranteed success and if the spell didn’t work she’d refund the money he’d spent on herbs. He’d try anything. Amazon had already shipped two books about witchcraft.

He stalled. Witchcraft? Seriously? Is that what he was doing?

Whatever. If it got Katy to send him naked photos, who cared, right?

He hurried from the room and down the stairs.

The sound of a patio door sliding caught him by surprise.

He froze. Was Fox coming in or going out?

Indie rock blared out from the backyard. David breathed again. He ran to the front door, but slowed to a casual walk as he exited the house.
