Son of a bitch! No one died!

We were mobbed outside the station. Everyone had a million questions. We would’ve been in a lot of trouble for taking the law into our own hands if we hadn’t, you know, saved the day. Oh, and if there were any cops around who weren’t also criminals.
Tango extricated herself from her mother and pulled me aside. “I need to know what Twist has,” she whispered. “If he had cameras in the studio. . . who knows what he has on me. I don’t want dozens of cops and lawyers and God knows who else examining that.”
Since the only two cops in town were both wanted by the law now, she was in luck. It’d be a while before anyone made it out to Dumass to start the investigation.
I gave her a squeeze, then reeled in Dad and Saundra. “You need to cover for us.”
“Where are you going?” Saundra asked.
Staring directly at Dad, I lied. “We’re going to the cemetery to pay our respects to my parents.”
Without hesitation, he hugged me. Out loud, he said, “Tell them hello for me.” Much more quietly, so only I would hear, he added, “You’ll tell me when you’re done.”
As my way of saying thank you, I kissed his cheek. Dads eat that shit up. He handed me the keys to Auntie Mac’s car.
Mrs. Tango’s-Mom chased us halfway down the block shouting a string of profanity her daughter refused to translate. “I can’t tell her where we’re going,” Tango said. “She’s a big part of the reason I need to do this.”
