"We have to go!" Tom's hand made for a switch, but Abigail knocked it away.
“One second!” Abigail scowled as she concentrated. Another shot. This time, the bullet pinged off the flyer. David Mentmore managed to lift the E-Zapper. A high whine told of it powering up.
Then, with a leap, George was in her arms. “Now!" She yelled. "Let’s go!”
Tom didn’t need telling twice. The switch was flipped. The StarStriker quivered like a greyhound waiting to be let off the leash. “Max up! Dome lockdown!” Tom' voice was hoarse.
The StarStriker violently flung itself skywards, the dome sliding into place. The trees blurred and became small, dropping under them like a falling stone. In a second they were out of gunshot range and soon were higher than the mountains.
Presently, Tom said, “ease up. Circle.” The StarStriker ceased climbing and gently circled, the earth curving beneath them, the enormous night sky an infinite dome above.
It was quiet. Abigail looked round. The moon seemed bright and close. Then she noticed, on the smooth surface of the flyer, just the other side of the dome, a handprint. It was still smouldering slightly. David Mentmore must have left practically all the skin behind when he wrenched his hand free.
“What happened?” Abigail asked. “I mean, when he touched-”
“Ah.” Tom smiled. “When I made myself a validated flyer, I also changed his status. From ‘valid’ to ‘known thief.’ She“ he slapped the sloping surface in front of him “was only trying to protect herself.” He looked round. “Wow! We made it!” He put his head back and yelled.
So did Abigail. A joyous, uncaring yell, echoing into the void around them.
George barked and licked her hand. He didn’t seem in the least put out by being over three miles up.
“OK!” said Tom. He was hyper, his hands drumming on the StarStriker’s smooth interior. “Wow! We’ve a lot to talk about.”
“Lots,” said Abigail.
“But first, where are we going?”
Abigail paused. They could go anywhere. But then she said what she always knew she’d say. “V-CityB.” And then she added the sweetest word she knew.
“Home.”

Crouched over, holding his damaged hands against his stomach, David watched the flyer ascending.
His eyes were dark, fathomless and bleak, filled with ruthless, uncaring purpose.
He'd hunt them down. Hunt them down and destroy them.
