I did so and sat their exam.
The end of term approached and I had not heard from the Town Hall, so my mother and I went to the Labour Exchange for me to get a job.
The clerk shuffled through a card index and gave me the name and address of a firm of a Chartered Accountants Wetford Cardsley & Co. St. Ann’s Square, Manchester.
I didn't know what a chartered accountant looked like let alone what they did. However, I went for an interview with my mother and rather to my great surprise got the job as a junior trainee audit clerk, for the grand sum of £2.5s.0d a week. (£02.25)
I left school on 20 December 1952 and started work on 6 January 1953.
Three weeks later I was offered a post in the Town Hall's Treasury Office.
I declined the offer.
