The teacher tapped the blackboard with his stick. “Let’s practice reading the names on the blackboard.” After they did so, Rémi complimented everyone. “We’ll continue the lesson in the morning. Tonight, I’ll read you the story of Aladdin.”
“Oh,... tell us about Aladdin,” begged the Captain.
“You’ll find out tonight!” replied Rémi with a smile. “Bye! See you later.”
“Promise you’ll all be back later,” said the Captain.
Max promised solemnly: “Captain, you have our word!” His companions nodded. Then, they left the ship and headed toward the island, anxious to tell Rubidjad the good news.

Chapter 16
Mysterious Revelations
The Bookworms walked toward the library. “Oh, it’s good to be free,” said Rémi. “I can’t believe I am teaching the Captain and his crew to read. I didn’t know if I could do it, but it’s easy.”
“We all had faith in you,” Merielle praised. “We knew you could do it.”
Rubidjad was finishing Story Hour. As soon as the Bookworms entered, Rubidjad spotted Rémi and shouted: “Rémi! You’re free! It’s so good to see you! I knew you all would come up with a good plan. Come to the back, I want to hear the details of Rémi’s rescue.”
The Bookworms recounted the rescue mission. Rubidjad listened attentively. “You used your heads, and your strategy worked!” exclaimed Rubidjad. “After a few days, if you feel you can trust Captain Malo and his crew, you have my permission to bring them here and show them our library, books, and maps.”
“I think they’ll like that,” replied Rémi
Rubidjad stroked his beard. “Let me ask you an important question. Is the name of the ship the Malo?”
“Well, yes, but, how do you know that?” asked Rémi.
“Oh, just a good guess,” replied Rubidjad with a little smile and nodding his head, as if he knew a secret. “How is the reading going, Rémi?”
“I’m returning Peter Pan,” he replied. “Tonight, I’ll read them Aladdin.”
“Good. Take more books with you,” suggested Rubidjad. “I recommend: Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in Eighty Days, both by Jules Verne.”
“That’s a good idea,” replied Rémi. “Before we go back to the ship, let’s relax with a good book. Shall we?” They all agreed.
Rubidjad stopped them: “Wait! I have something important to tell you. Remember the map Merielle found in a box? Well, I am now certain that this is a treasure map.”
“A treasure map?” they all exclaimed.
“Yes!” confirmed Rubidjad. “And according to the diagram, it appears that the treasure is buried on this island!”
“What?” they exclaimed.
“How exciting!” added Max.
“But that’s not all. Do you remember the wooden planks found by Rémi and Merielle? Well, I put the pieces of wood together, like a puzzle, and the letters spelled El Galleon.”
“Is that the name of a Spanish ship?” asked Merielle.
“Yes, it is,” replied Rubidjad. “With the help of my crystal ball, I researched the name on the Internet. I found that in the year 1809, two pirate ships vanished during a storm. One was the El Galleon, and the other was...”
“Don’t tell me,” interjected Rémi. “It can’t be!”
“Anyone want to guess?” asked Rubidjad.
“I’ll guess,” replied Lily eagerly. “Is it the Malo?”
“Exactly!” Rubidjad continued: “In 1809 two pirate ships disappeared in a storm. It was a custom for pirates to bury their treasure and to keep a map of its location.”
“That’s clever,” interjected Max. “That way their riches were safe from other pirate ships.”
“That’s right,” agreed Rubidjad. “It would appear that the pirates from El Galleon had just buried their treasure on this island before engaging the Malo in a battle. The two ships fought during a storm, and El Galleon sank.”
“But, the Malo is here,... now!” interrupted Rémi. “How can that be?”
“That brings me to a mysterious phenomenon,” continued Rubidjad. “The Malo and its crew went through a time warp and were sent two hundred years into the future, and they ended up here, on the far side of our island.”
“Two hundred years into the future!” exclaimed Max.
“Yes,” replied Rubidjad. “And, the pieces of wood from El Galleon and the box containing the map were sent into the future with the Malo.”
“That’s complicated!” exclaimed Merielle.
“Not really,” replied Rubidjad. “It explains why the Malo appeared in the twenty-first century with a Captain whose pastime is to go after other ships, when the time of piracy is long gone!”
They were all speechless and thinking,... treasure buried on an island, two ships fighting in a storm, one sank while the other went through a time warp; pieces of wreckage and a box containing a map,... and they all turn up here? That was a lot to think about.
Rémi broke the silence: “Everything makes sense now. Yesterday, the Captain believed he was going after a pirate ship. He doesn’t realize that he is two hundred years into his future. Wow! How are we going to explain that to him?”
“Let’s not say anything to him just yet,” said Rubidjad. “We’ll find the right time later. I’ll continue my research to pinpoint the location of the treasure.”
“I can’t wait,” said Rémi.
Max turned to his friends. “Let’s relax in the library before heading back to the ship, shall we?”
With a pensive look, they followed him.

Chapter 17
A Story Is Born
After hearing such exciting news, none of them could concentrate on reading. They talked at length about the treasure and the time warp.
“What a story!” said Rémi.
“How about writing a book?” suggested Max.
“Yeah!” they all exclaimed. “Let’s do it now!”
“I’ll get my typewriter,” said Merielle eagerly.
“I have a great idea for a title,” announced Lily. “How about, ‘The Rescue.’”
“It’s not bad,” said Max, “but let’s write the story first, then we’ll decide on the title.”
“A good story often starts with ‘Once upon a time’ or ‘It was a dark and stormy night,’” pointed out Merielle.
“Let’s make it dramatic,” said Max. “How about ‘Thunder and the sound of cannons rumbled through the air...’”
“Fantastic!” they exclaimed.
Merielle started typing away. Several hours later, the story was all finished.
“You know that this is only the first part of the story,” said Max. “Next, we’ll have to write about the treasure.”
“But we’ll have to wait to find out what happens,” said Lily.
“Come on! Let’s find a good title,” said Merielle. “I suggest we call it Rubidjad Island.”
“That’s pretty good,” replied Max. “How about, The Chronicles of Rubidjad Island?”
“You forgot my rescue!” pointed out Rémi. “How about, The Chronicles of Rubidjad Island - The Rescue?”
They all thought it was a good title and subtitle. The book was all finished, and they placed it on a shelf.
The cover said:
The Chronicles of Rubidjad Island

TESTIMONIALS
“Great Work! This series will educate the next generation of kids.”
—Richard (Ric) O’Barry, Marine Mammal Specialist, The Cove —2010 Academy Award
“These stories magically twist, turn, and dive along a journey to a healthy, peaceful ocean future we can now all imagine.”
—Dr. Wallace ‘J.’ Nichols, Research Associate, California Academy of Sciences
“A delightful read – one that’s hard to put down once you started reading it. Just grand for all ages. Entertaining and thought provoking!”
—Dorothy Howard Lovelace
“I am a grandfather who grew up in quite a different social milieu. Values were different then, better in my view. After reading Rubidjad Island to my grand kids, I could not help but feel those good old values were back wrapped in new clothes that would surely entice kids of today. Here we have all the modern directions like respect for animals, responsible environmentalism and conservation all put into a fanciful journey story that even Joseph Campbell would admire. But this story while presented quite viscerally to kids is layered in such a way to grab the kid in all of us. I highly recommend this book.”
—Al Wayne
THE FUTURE OF THE STORY
Our dream is to produce a series of videos
for the hearing impaired,
An opera,
A play, and
A movie trilogy.

AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY
Danielle Perrotte Dobbs
Danielle was born in Saint-Malo, France, a picturesque town by the sea. While growing up she was fascinated by Jacques Cousteau’s TV series and was touched by his poetic narration of marine life. After dinner, she and her mother used to take a walk to the sea. It’s no surprise that one of her main characters is named after her hometown.
In her twenties, she immigrated to the US and attended the University of South Florida where she met her future husband. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She and her husband had a daughter, and Danielle taught her to read while a baby and taught her French as well. She then developed teaching materials to help parents achieve the same results with their babies.
Besides her passion for children and the sea, Danielle is an animal lover. She is very concerned about animal cruelty and the health of the ocean deteriorating.
Great conservationists, such as, Jacques Cousteau, Steve Irwin, and Ric O’Barry have all said the same thing: “People protect what they love!” Danielle couldn’t agree more. She believes it is only by developing compassion in children toward animals and exposing them to the wonders of the seas that they will develop an appreciation of the ocean and become conservationists. Children are the beacons of hope for a better world!
