Jason and Becky looked at each other with tears streaming down their faces, Jason looked at Becky, and took out the gold ring, placing it on Becky’s little finger and said “I promise I will be no one else but myself, and the best me I can.”
Becky opened her purse, took out a small silver ring, and placed it on Jason’s pinky, “I promise I will do my best as myself, and not injure you in the process.”
At that exact moment, the bells at St. Mary’s church began to ring, signaling 6pm.
“Funny,” Becky said, lost in thought for a moment…
“What’s funny?”
“When Matt was here hacking into Quicken,” Becky looked up at Jason, “those same bells rang at lunchtime.”
“Want to go home?”
“Not really,” Becky said, “You hungry?”
“I could eat.”
“Ever been to Texas De Brazil?”
“Is that the place where they bring you steak on swords?”
“Yeah,” Becky said, her eyes lighting up, “I’ve been craving it ever since Matt stood me up there.”
“Mind if I finish the date he started?” Jason asked. “Maybe this was his way of making sure we started off on the right path.”
“I think he’d insist.”
“Me too.”
They walked the three blocks south to the Compuware building.
As they walked in together, Becky and Jason saw Matt Becker’s reservation for 6pm, written in the ledger book of reservations.
. . .for Today.
