The sterile room, loaded with life support equipment and a single bed was empty of visitors. The heart monitor beeped. The ventilator pumped a steady rhythm. The IV dripped constantly.
The only door into the room clicked open, making no sound as it was pushed inward just far enough for a small blonde head to peek inside. She ducked her head back out to check and make sure her grandparents still talked with the doctor. They did not see her slip into the room and limp painfully to the bed's side. This was the first time she had been able to visit since the accident and she wanted to be alone. She reached through the bedrails and clasped the patient's cold hand, holding it tight in her small grasp.
"Mommy," she whispered, "I miss you."
Karen opened her eyes.
