his back staring up at the most astonishing being he had ever imagined.

She floated in front of him wearing a dress of butterflies gracefully fluttering in perfect formation. Her raven hair hung down to her waist and had dozens of daisies woven through multiple small plaits. On her hands and going up her forearms were very faint gold markings, almost like she was embroidered with delicate golden thread. Her irises were the palest moss green and her pupils perfectly matched the light brown bark of the oak. She was mind-blowing.

“Why are you running away, Sebastian?” she repeated.

  “Who are you?”

“I am Apsaras. Why you are running away?” She sat down on an invisible chair and the butterflies instantly conformed to her adjusted posture.

“I don’t know why I’m running away,” Sebastian answered. “I am confused.” He sat up.

“There’s no need to be confused, Manitou,” she smiled, gently stroking his cheek. “In order to fulfil your destiny and to enable you to use your abilities to its optimum, you need to be one of a pair.” As soon as she said the word ‘pair’ he understood, but she continued, “you and Fee were created as a pair, to be together for eternity. But if you chose to renounce your destiny you will both lose your gifts. You will return to the way you were before the changes started occurring but since Fee had already undergone her full transformation she will cease to exist,” she bluntly stated.

“She will die?” His voice was barely audible. It was incomprehensible.

“Yes.” Sadness flickered in her eyes.

  “But why?”

“This is the way we were created. The world is broken and for us to heal it we have to be complete. On our own we will not be able to fulfil our destinies. When we called Fee she knew that she would have to choose a mate in order to be completed. She knew what the consequences would be if you didn’t choose her in return but she accepted without hesitation.”

“Why didn’t she tell me?” But he already knew the answer. She didn’t want to manipulate him into choosing her. Fee knew he liked Mia but she hoped their own connection was stronger. She wanted to give him the chance to understand the changes in him without the pressure of feeling responsible for her life.

He thought of her gentle smile, the way her dense lashes hid the mystery in her green eyes and the faint scent of vanilla and roses that accompanied her. A world existing without her was too hard to imagine and a hoarse sob escaped his throat.

“I can’t lose her,” the words fell from his lips and he saw Apsaras smile through his stubborn tears. He blinked and it was like she was never there, only leaving a lone butterfly brushing his cheek.

He found Fee asleep in her garden and sat watching her for a while before she felt his presence and opened her eyes.

“Sebastian,” she whispered, tears silently rolling down her cheeks.

“I can’t be without you,” he said as he wiped the tears away and traced the curves of her mouth with his fingertips. She pulled him close and just held onto him for a long time. When they finally kissed the whole universe clicked into place and everything made sense.

For a fragment of a moment he had a vision of the violet sparkles disappearing from Mia’s eyes, but it was replaced with a warm glow before he could make any sense of it.
