The asshole said, “No alcohol in that daiquiri, right?”
Gabriel nodded. “It’s virgin, just like you said.”
“That’s it then,” the asshole said, and Gabriel turned to go.
The woman’s voice stopped him. Though he’d been seeing the man and woman for nearly a week, he’d never heard her speak before. Some kind of abusive relationship, he’d assumed. None of his business. She was hot, though, almost painfully so. Even with the pale, straight scars just barely visible on her shoulders and chest.
“Thank you,” she said and favored him with a look and a small smile.
Gabriel smiled back and saw, for the first time, the woman’s belly. That explained it, then. She was pregnant.
“No problem,” he said. “If you need anything else, just give a shout.”
“We will,” she said and looked out at the water. Just before Gabriel turned back around to go inside, he caught one last glimpse of the woman out of the corner of his eye. There was something about the way she stared out at the horizon, some sense of serenity, that he had never seen before. It was nearly painful to observe, so he walked back inside, thinking to himself that he had been wrong to think of her as merely attractive. That was missing the point of a woman like this, entirely.
She was the most beautiful creature he had ever seen.
