  Leaning on the icy cold wall, Dorothy sobbed quietly. Out of blues, the cell’s door opened and Charles walked in.

  “Charles?” Dorothy exclaimed.

  “Dorothy…” Charles sighed and offered her his hand. “Madam is dead.”

  “What?”

  “She fell down the stairs by accident.” Charles explained. “Dead.”

  “And Maria?”

  Charles sadly shook his head. Dorothy burst into tears instantly.

  “I’m sorry.” As she fell against his chest, he muttered. There were many girls whose life he had failed. Yet, at least, the one he cared most in this world had not drifted away from him.

  Gently, Charles embraced Dorothy and the two stayed that way for a long silent tribute.
