Shawn climbed back into the Crow’s Nest when he realized his brother was missing; he was looking out for Ronan. He had also heard the distress calls from Paean, something about which he was completely helpless. But he understood that Federi and Ronan had gone to rescue her, so hopefully that would be alright.

“Hey, hey, what’s this?” he asked, picking up Federi’s abandoned wrist-com. “Can’t be mine, I’m wearing mine. Got to be Federi’s!” He tested it out by calling Federi on his com. The other com transmitted his voice.

Shawn put Federi’s com on his other wrist and watched as his brother and Rushka re-emerged out of the renewed rain.

“There they come,” he yelled. But where was Federi? And Sherman, and Paean?

Shawn stared at the under-crewed boat, and at the wrist-com and at the sea, with white crests riding the high peaks again. Still pretty rough, and the rain picking up again. The clouds were darkening once more. Federi’s life vest shone like a beacon on him.

  “Uh-oh,” he commented.
