Escape
At the end of road, I see a nice Chevy Impala parked on street which catches my attention. I walk up to the car and thank whoever owns the car for leaving the windows open. Not even thinking of the consequences of possibly getting caught, I hop in and hotwire the car. As the engine starts I close the door, fix the mirrors, place my seatbelt on and drive. Turning up the radio, I feel the anger leave my body as the adrenaline takes over. Driving is my sweet escape from my life.
I am happy in my own world for a while, driving and singing along to the radio but like always something ruins my good mood.
My phone starts ringing from beside me, I glance at the caller ID to see my brothers name, Kevin.
“What do you want?” I say.
“Hello to you too little sis! Where are you?”
“Why do you suddenly care about my whereabouts? Mom and dad only care about money.”
“You’re not home and mom doesn’t know where you went. Are you okay?”
“Wow, mom actually cares? Don’t worry, I’m not running away. I don’t have enough money to run away even if I wanted to.”
“That’s not funny! Stop saying you’re running away. Come home, you work tomorrow morning.”
I throw the phone to the passenger seat as I hear the dial tone. You would think my brother would help me but no he doesn’t, I have got to stop hoping my family will change for the better. No one can help me out of this except myself.
Feeling the anger come back, I head back to where I found the car before I do something stupid. I stop the car in the same spot I found it and just sit there looking at my surroundings. While staring across the road, I notice a Jack Daniel’s whiskey bottle on the floor of the passenger seat.
Wow, nice car and my favorite alcohol! Whoever owns this car is amazing!
I drink straight from the bottle, trying to calm down. No harm in drinking since my house is a few blocks away.
Last thing I remember was laying down and taking sips from the bottle.
I wake up in a panic because I heard someone talking to me. I glance at the window to see one of my neighbors, Abby.
“Sweetie, are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine. Why?”
“I saw you drinking and came over to check on you because I saw some guy doing something in the car and I thought you were in trouble.”
“Thank you, Abby, I’m okay now.”
She stares at me unconvinced while walking away. Some guy? Was it the owner? Why didn’t he wake me up? Oh god, did he rob me?
I check all my pockets and don’t notice anything missing but I do see an envelope on the dashboard. I open it to find a letter.
Dear, person who hotwired my car
I am not mad at you and you’re not in any kind of trouble. My friend lives in this neighborhood and I have seen you walking around at night quite a few times. When I asked about you, my friend told me you just walk and cry because your parents aren’t the best. I know I’m a stranger to you but I just want you to know that I understand. I had a rough childhood as well, escaping feels like the best option. I agree that leaving sometimes is the for the best but I want you to stop wandering around at night which is why in this envelope you will find a hotel key which as been paid for a few months and money to last you for a while. The car? It’s yours, the key is in the envelope as well. This is my baby so treat it good. In the hotel room, you will find my number, call me if you need anything else.
