return of her proper age though, even with the aches and pains. She had earned them. This was where things felt right, and home with James was where she belonged. A little something remained though, like a pilot light flickering deep inside her. Perhaps it had been there all along, just needing a little spark to dance again. It gave her a vitality hadn’t felt in years and made her smile.
Scanning the old Ballroom, she looked about for any sign of the mysterious young man. "Hello? Are you still there?"
There was no answer. She no longer felt frightened by the shadows though.
Perhaps he was a part of the old Ballroom as well, she thought, an echo of its old soul come to help her.
Had it all been real? To her, it didn't really matter. She had saved the Ballroom from destruction. Perhaps it thanked her by granting an amazing wish in return. She’d make sure the starlight sparkled again someday.
Emma walked slowly off the dance floor. Leaving the Ballroom behind, she headed for home.

Paul Andrews was born and raised in the mountains of rural Pennsylvania. He writes novels, novellas and short stories when not working his day job as a R&D project manager. His parents met and fell in love in a Big Band era Ballroom not unlike the Starlite. The war was over, the GIs back home, and only their futures lay before them. Though this tale is not theirs, that fabulous old Ballroom, and America’s Greatest Generation, inspired this short story. Paul currently lives, works and writes in Durham, North Carolina with his wife, their two children and two cats.
