I was still smiling two hours later when I got Jordan’s text. The sight of his picture on my phone made the butterflies in my stomach form a most pit. Was the boy going to cancel out? Or maybe he just wanted to flirt.
Or maybe none of the above.
“Full disclosure,” his message read, “I am a vampire. R we still cool?”
The mosh pit in my stomach did the wave.
Of course I knew vampires existed. Everyone knew. Ever since they “came into the light” a few years ago, the vampire rights debate was all over the news. But I didn’t know any personally. They mostly kept to themselves—and most people said that was good. I mean, they’re dangerous, right? Not the sort of people you should follow into the woods. I was sure that’s what my dads would say. I mean, John and Eric are liberal with a capital L, but they are also protective with a capital H for hovering helicopter dads. They wouldn’t want me to go get arrested in the woods with a human boy, never mind a vampire. I flopped down on my bed. I should really call him and bail. My thumb hovered over the buttons on my phone.
But there was his picture looking back at me. That warm smile. Those dark chocolate eyes. Cancel, I told myself. It’s the only thing to do.
