  Chapter Six

The town finally came into view, hidden among the snow covered mountains. It had a large wall around it, higher than most that Notch had seen. He could make out Iron Golems and even a couple of guards walking along the wall.

“They must be having increased attacks as well.” Notch said, trying to show that it wasn’t him who was cursed.

“No,” Pauline replied, shooting the idea down, “They always have increased guards like that. The village is well secluded and is attacked often because of it. No one else lives in these mountains for miles.”

Notch fell silent, slightly disgruntled over Pauline’s reply. The last thing he wanted was for everyone to blame him for the spider attacks and other curious events but it looked like it was going to shape up to be that way. The group walked up to the wall and James stepped forward, calling up to the guard. The conversation was quick and soon the door in front of them opened, allowing them to walk inside.

The town looked old but well taken care of. The building style was simple, if not elegant. He imagined the houses all had wool carpet to try to keep the heat in. The soft bleating of sheep rolled in from across a hill nearby where the farmers lived. It was quiet. Notch tried to imagine Herobrine growing up here.

“Figured we’d get to an inn…” James was saying.

Notch cut him off, “No, thanks. I want to start right away and find out more about Herobrine. You guys can head to the inn.”

“Where are you going to go?”

Notch pointed to a nearby tiny building, “That place is the Welcome building. I’ll start there.”

James nodded, “I’ll come with you.”

“I’ll get us a room at the inn then.” Pauline said, nodding at them both before walking away.

James and Notch walked across the cobblestone pathway towards the Welcome building and stepped inside. There was an old man behind a counter with bookshelves lining the walls, a crafting table and a display case of creeper heads.

“Charming.” Mumbled Notch as they walked up to the desk.

James grinned and then looked at the old man, “Excuse me, sir?”

The man looked up from his book and seemed surprised at someone actually being in the Welcome center, “Oh! Hello! Yes, hello!” He shut his book, sending dust up in the air.

“Hey. I’m James and this is Notch,” Notch gave a small wave, “We just got into town.”

“Great! Great!” He said twice, “You came to the right place…the Welcome center!” The old man started to laugh as if he had told a hilarious joke, “What would you like to know first? I can tell you the history of our town! Our mountain village doesn’t see many travelers, not anymore anyway. We’ve been pretty secluded. No one wants to take the time to come up here and see us, you know? Anyway, I’ve been rambling. What do you want to know? Ah, I can see you eying those creeper heads, young sir!” The old man was talking to Notch now, who had been glancing again at the creeper heads.

“Yeah, just…seems like…something strange to be in a Welcome center.” Notch shrugged.

“Maybe, maybe! But do you know who slayed those creepers?” James and Notch both said no and the old man beamed, “Herobrine!”

James glanced at Notch quickly, “Really?” He said, “The Herobrine of legend?”

The old man’s smile grew, “You know of him? Not many people do anymore, I am afraid, such a shame, such a shame.”

James nudged Notch with his shoulder and Notch cleared his throat, “Funny you bring up Herobrine because we are actually…studying…him.”

“Yeah,” James jumped in, “We’re studying him. For a…” His eyes roamed around the room, “A book!”

“Really?” The old man said, delighted, “What would you like to know?”

“Is it true Herobrine was born here?” James asked.

“Yes, yes! I can lead you to his home, you know, it’s still standing! We keep it up, untouched, as a shrine.”

“Can we see it?” Notch blurted out.

“I’m afraid I can’t leave my post,” The old man frowned, “In case other visitors come in.”

Notch doubted that but he replied with, “Understandable. Can you tell us where it is?”

The old man nodded and began to describe to them where to find the house. James took notes and promised to return if they had more Herobrine questions and to get a better look at the creeper heads. Soon they were back out in the chilly air, a light snow now falling. James looked down at the paper.

  “This is great.” He said.

“Come on, let’s go.” Notch said, tugging on James.

They crossed behind the Welcome center, towards the hills where the farms were. There were a few of them close together but Herobrine’s old home was on the outskirts of town, against the wall surrounding it. (The old man had said they had made sure to include Herobrine’s house on this side of the wall.)

Soon they saw it, a tiny and run down thing with weeds and vines over taking it. It was small with a messy yard that Notch guessed it used to be farmland. There seemed to be random chunks of iron and other ores thrown around. One half of the roof was caved in and the windows had been shattered.

“So much for keeping their hero’s home intact.” James said dryly.

Notch found it odd too that for worshipping Herobrine they had let his childhood home go to such ruin. There was nothing nice about the place – it just seemed sad the more Notch looked at it.

“You wanna go in?” James asked, “The guy didn’t say we couldn’t.”

“Should we get Pauline?” Notch asked.

James opened his mouth to speak but Notch didn’t hear him. In fact, he couldn’t hear anything. He felt as if he was being pulled back…everything was rewinding…Herobrine’s house was fixing it himself…Notch closed his eyes to stop the dizzy feeling.

When he opened them up, James was gone. Notch was staring at Herobrine’s home in perfect condition.

Notch didn’t know how or why but he knew that he had somehow ended up back in time.
