* Bella wakes up in the hospital; Edward is there
Edward tells her that Emmett and Jasper took care of James; Alice has viewed the videotape
* Renee comes into the room; she wants Bella to move to Florida, but Bella refuses
* Edward had thought Bella might want to move away
Bella makes him promise he won't leave her; Edward says he'll stay as long as it makes her happy, as long as it's what's best for her
* Bella wants Edward to change her into a vampire
He refuses; they are at an impasse
EPILOGUE
* Edward surprises Bella by taking her to the prom
Bella doesn't want to go--she can't dance, plus she's wearing a cast on one leg; Edward lifts her onto his feet and they dance
* Jacob Black shows up
Billy Black has paid Jacob to give a message to Bella--they want her to break up with Edward
* Bella dances again with Edward
* She wants him to change her into a vampire right away; he wants her to stay human; she says being with him is enough for now

CHAPTER 1
* Bella has a dream about her grandmother, who turns out to be Bella as an old woman; Edward enters the dream and wishes her "Happy Birthday"
* It's Bella's eighteenth birthday, and Alice has planned a party at the Cullens' house
* Bella and Edward watch a video of Romeo and Juliet
Edward envies Romeo's ease of suicide; Edward tells Bella that he wouldn't live if something happened to her--he would go to Italy and provoke the Volturi; Bella takes a picture of Edward with her new camera
* Bella and Edward go to the birthday party
Bella gets a paper cut while opening a present; Jasper loses control at the smell of her blood; Edward pushes Bella out of danger, but into the crystal dishes; she cuts her arm; Bella looks up to see six suddenly ravenous vampires
CHAPTER 2
* Emmett and Rosalie drag Jasper outside
* Carlisle stitches up Bella's arm
Carlisle tells a little about his human life; he explains to Bella Edward's belief that vampires have no soul; he tells her the story of Edward's dying mother begging Carlisle to save Edward
* Edward is sullen and unhappy about Bella's injury and the Cullens' reactions to it
* Edward's kiss that night is urgent, reminiscent of a goodbye kiss
CHAPTER 3
* Edward is remote and silent; Bella is frightened
Alice and Jasper have gone away; Edward doesn't stay with her the next two nights
* Edward takes Bella to the edge of the woods to have a talk
Edward says his family is leaving; he makes Bella promise not to do anything reckless or foolish, in return promising that after he leaves, it will be as if he never existed; Bella tries to follow him into the forest but gets lost and collapses; hours later Bella is found by Sam Uley
* October-November-December-January: Bella is like a zombie
CHAPTER 4
* Charlie threatens to send Bella to her mother in Florida
Bella is lifeless; she screams in her sleep; Charlie thinks maybe Renee can help
* To placate Charlie, Bella asks Jessica to go to a movie with her
* Bella and Jessica walk down the street to get some food
They pass a bar and see four men standing outside; Bella approaches them; they seem familiar; she feels a rush of adrenaline
* Bella hears Edward's voice, angry and concerned
Bella comes out of the lifeless haze, her senses awake
* That night Bella feels the nightly pain like a huge hole punched through her chest--it is hard to breathe
CHAPTER 5
* Bella is out of the numbness, but still has nightmares of nothingness; she holds herself tightly together
* Bella realizes that she doesn't need to keep her promise to Edward
Bella wants to be reckless and stupid; she finds two free, broken-down motorcycles and takes them to Jacob Black to be repaired
CHAPTER 6
* Bella starts spending time with Jacob
Bella is surprised to hear herself laugh; Jacob carries happiness like an aura--an earthbound sun; Charlie is cautiously relieved to see her happy
* Bella makes a comment at lunch in the cafeteria; her friends are stunned
CHAPTER 7
* Bella drives to Edward's house to see if she will hear his voice again--nothing
* Jacob finishes the motorcycles
While driving the bikes out to a secluded riding place, Bella sees four boys on a cliff overlooking the water; one jumps off; Jacob explains that the boys are just cliff diving, that it's an adrenaline rush; Bella wants to give cliff diving a try; Jacob says the boys are Sam Uley's gang; he seems worried and frightened
* Bella realizes that Jacob likes her as more than just a friend
CHAPTER 8
* Jacob instructs Bella how to ride the motorcycle
* As soon as Bella lets go of the clutch, she hears Edward's angry voice
The motorcycle falls on top of her, but she is eager to try again; the second attempt goes better; she hears Edward's voice several times; she crashes and cuts her head; she apologizes to Jacob for bleeding
* After several days of accidents and injuries, Bella and Jacob decide to try hiking--Bella wants to see Edward's meadow again
CHAPTER 9
* Bella's time is filled with school, work, and Jacob
* Mike invites Bella to a movie; she turns it into a group activity; she invites Jacob and Quil
Everyone backs out or comes down with the flu except Mike and Jacob; Mike gets sick during the movie
* Jacob tells Bella he will always be there for her
Bella doesn't want to lead Jacob on; she feels she has nothing left to give
* Jacob doesn't feel well; Bella gets sick
CHAPTER 10
* Jacob never calls to say he is better; Billy won't let Bella talk to Jacob
Bella is told that Jacob has mono and can't have visitors for a month
* Bella doesn't handle "alone" well; the hole in her chest is worse than ever
Charlie is worried
* Bella decides to find Edward's meadow on her own
When she does, the memories there are too painful
* Laurent shows up in the meadow
Laurent knows the Cullens are gone; Bella hears Edward's warning voice; Laurent is thirsty; he says he'll kill Bella quickly, that it will be better than what Victoria has planned for her, that Victoria wants to torture Bella in revenge for Edward killing James
* Five huge wolves appear; Laurent runs away; the wolves follow
CHAPTER 11
* Bella is terrified to know that Victoria is coming for her; she is worried about Charlie
* Bella realizes what has happened to Jacob--Sam has gotten to him
Bella drives to La Push to see Jacob; she talks first to Quil, who is worried he will be next
* Jacob is angry; he says his problem is all the bloodsuckers' fault; he is not good enough to be Bella's friend anymore
* Bella is alone again
CHAPTER 12
* That night Bella hears a sound outside her window; she is sure Victoria has come to kill her, but it is Jacob
Jacob has come to apologize for breaking his promise; Bella is tired and upset; Jacob cannot tell her his secret but hopes she can guess; he tells her she needs to remember the Quileute legends he talked about
* In a dream Bella sees Jacob turn into a werewolf
Bella realizes that her only human fri

* Charlie goes out with a group of men to kill the wolves

CHAPTER 13
* Bella goes to warn Jacob and to ask if he can try not to be a werewolf
* Jacob is relieved that Bella doesn't hate him
Jacob explains that the wolves protect people from vampires; they killed Laurent, and they're trying to catch Victoria, but they don't know what she is after; Bella tells Jacob that Victoria is after her
* Jacob calls a meeting with the wolves; Bella learns that wolves hear one another's thoughts
Bella says Edward can also read minds

* Bella meets the wolf pack
Paul loses control; Jacob phases on the fly; they fight; Jared and Embry take a shaken Bella to Emily's house
* Jacob, Paul, and Sam return; they make plans to protect Bella and Charlie, and to kill Victoria
CHAPTER 15
* Bella spends most of spring break in La Push, while the wolves patrol the area
Jacob tells Bella the good things about being a wolf: warmth, fast healing, speed; Bella tells Jacob about her scar, about how Edward saved her from James, and about Alice's and Jasper's talents
* It hurts Bella to talk about the Cullens
Jacob promises to take Bella cliff diving for some fun but ends up having to follow a new trail left by Victoria
* Bella is lonely and frustrated; she decides to cliff jump alone
She hears Edward's voice, then jumps; the fall is exhilarating--the water is the danger; Bella is tossed around beneath the surface; Edward's voice commands her to keep swimming, keep fighting; Bella senses she is going to die and is happy to have Edward's voice with her at the end; Bella's last thought is Goodbye, I love you.
CHAPTER 16
* Jacob pulls Bella from the water and resuscitates her
Sam is there, but Jacob tells him to get back to the hospital; Jacob tells Bella that Harry Clearwater has had a heart attack
* Jacob takes Bella to his house; they both rest
Bella remembers Romeo and Juliet: If Romeo left Juliet, could she love Paris? Wouldn't Romeo want her to be happy?
* Billy Black comes home; Harry has died
Jacob takes Bella home, embraces her; Bella wonders if she can love Jacob enough, and make him happy; she knows if she kisses him, the decision will be made
* Jacob smells a vampire and rushes to get Bella away
Bella sees Carlisle's car and demands to go back; Jacob feels betrayed
CHAPTER 17
* Bella goes into her house, sees Alice and runs into her arms
Alice is confused--she saw Bella throw herself off a cliff; Bella assures Alice she was not trying to kill herself, just having fun cliff diving; Bella explains that Jacob Black saved her; Alice did not see Jacob in her vision
* Bella tells Alice that Jacob is a werewolf and that Victoria is trying to kill her
* Bella makes Alice stay with her
Bella overhears Charlie telling Alice how bad it was for Bella when Edward left
* Alice tells Bella she has found out her real name; she had a sister, and she has a niece
* Harry Clearwater's funeral is the next day
CHAPTER 18
* Jacob comes over before the funeral to see how long Alice is staying; he can't be around vampires
* Jacob is getting ready to kiss Bella when the phone rings
Jacob answers the phone and says Charlie is not there, he's at the funeral
* Alice rushes in to say it was Edward on the phone--Rosalie has told Edward about Bella jumping off the cliff
Edward thinks the funeral is for Bella and is going to the Volturi
* Alice and Bella hurriedly leave for the airport and Italy
Jacob begs Bella to stay with him
CHAPTER 19
* On the plane, Alice tells Bella it is too dangerous for any of the family to come with them--she can't lose Jasper
Alice tells Bella Edward needs to see her to believe she is alive; she explains about the Volturi, their guard, their law enforcement, and their eating arrangements
* Alice closes her eyes and follows Edward's actions in her mind
* In Italy, Alice steals a Porsche and she and Bella race to Volterra
It is St. Marcus Day; Edward plans to enter the main plaza when the sun is at its brightest, at noon
CHAPTER 20
* The roads around Volterra are crowded
Alice drops off Bella and tells her which direction to run; there are people everywhere; Bella is afraid she'll be too late
* The clock is tolling and Bella sees Edward at the edge of the light
She cries his name but he is not listening--his eyes are closed, his face peaceful; Bella slams into him; Edward believes that he's dead
* Bella finally makes Edward see that they are not dead, but Felix and Demetri are already there; there is a confrontation; Alice joins them
Jane arrives and Edward's defensive stance relaxes in defeat; they follow Jane through a long, cold alley to meet the Volturi; Edward holds Bella, caresses her face, kisses her hair
CHAPTER 21
* Jane finally leads them into what seems an unremarkable office; they pass through long halls with many doors, into a round, cavernous room filled with several vampires
* Aro cheerfully talks to them about their talents; he wonders how Edward can stand so close to Bella
* Aro knows that Bella is the one exception to Edward's gift; he wonders if she is also an exception to his own
Bella gives him her hand--nothing; Aro asks Jane to see if Bella is immune to her talent as well; Edward launches himself toward Jane but ends up on the floor writhing in pain; Aro redirects Jane toward Bella--again, nothing
* Aro asks Edward, Alice, and Bella to join his guard; they all say no
Aro notes that Bella knows their secrets; she must become a vampire or die; Alice gives her hand to Aro and shows him a vision of Bella as a vampire; Aro is satisfied; they are free to go
* A group of tourists is led into the room; their screams of terror begin before Bella, Edward, and Alice can make it down the hall
CHAPTER 22
* Bella stays awake all that day and through both plane flights--she doesn't want to miss a second of her time with Edward
In Edward's arms, it is easy for Bella to fantasize that he still wants her
* All the Cullens meet them at the airport and thank Bella for saving Edward
Rosalie apologizes for her part in the misunderstanding
* At Bella's home, a worried Charlie is furious with Edward
CHAPTER 23
* After a long sleep, Bella wakes to find Edward with her; she's convinced she's still asleep
* Edward tells Bella that Charlie has forbidden him to ever walk through his door again
* Edward is in agony over the dangers he left Bella to face
Edward tries to explain that he lied to Bella about not wanting her; he is astonished that she believed the lie after the thousands of times he told her he loved her; Bella answers that it never made sense for him to love her
* Edward tries to convince Bella that he loves her and will never leave her
Bella reminds Edward that she will grow old and die unless he changes her into a vampire; Edward refuses
* Bella decides to put her mortality up for a vote by Edward's family
CHAPTER 24
* On the way to Edward's house, Bella says her worst fear is that Edward will leave her
Edward tells her that her hold on him is permanent and unbreakable; Bella has an epiphany: Edward loves her
* The Cullens congregate in the dining room; Bella explains that her mortality involves all of them
