Solace,
I think you’re being unfair. You won’t tell me what it was I said to upset you, and you won’t give me a chance to defend myself. Instead of trying to talk to me, you just slammed the door in my face.
You have hurt me. Badly. I am sorry beyond words if I said or did anything to upset you. That was never my intention. Why would it be? I have nothing but the highest regard for you, both as a person and as a friend. Any harm or insult was purely unwitting.
Maybe we don’t know each other as well as we liked to think. But it doesn’t follow from that that we’re strangers. Not at all.
You mean more to me than you can possibly know, and you have no idea how much this unfairness wounds me.
Please, Solace, talk to me.
—Your friend Reynard

Solace,
I know you don’t want to talk to me anymore, but the heck with that, I’m going to wish you a happy birthday anyway.
So Happy Birthday.
