Read Toast Page 3

  Chapter 3

  What are brothers really for?

"Talk to you later, Nat." Now I remember why she's my closest friend.

"Have fun on the semi-date, Kaila. Tell me all." She trilled.

"I got to go, dad's going to come in and demand me to get off the phone, lol, this is so toasted it's practically burnt."

I end the call and jump off my bed, walking over to my CD player to see what CD is already in there. Green Day's already inside but I don't feel like smashing something. I change the CD to Linkin Park and I can't help but jump up and down yelling the lyrics.

"Kaila, sometimes you're so uncool it's hard to believe you're my sister!"

I turn around totally breathless, and unbelievably annoyed, I wonder how long he's been standing there watching me. How untoast is he to spy on his sister. Hopefully he hasn't taken a photo or video of me dancing and yelling.

"Mitch, what on earth are you doing?" I'm so angry at him for giving out my phone number and not telling me. And for watching me make a fool of myself in my own room.

"What're you doing Kaila?" he says, raising one of his eyebrows at me. He always manages to make me giggle when I'm angry at him!

"I asked first!" Now I feel like I'm a five year old. A bubble of giggles is climbing up my throat and I'm having a hard time suppressing them.

"I wanted to know what all the ‘Oh my gods’ were about, plus the commotion. I thought you were hurt yelling like that and all," he walks across the room and plonks himself down on my bed. "So tell me all the gossip," he says, adopting a girly voice.

"Well, this guy Nathan, from my English class asked me if I wanted to go to the movies with him and his friends!" I can hardly contain my excitement.

"How cool, I wonder how he got your number?" he pulls this mischievous grin. As if I don't know already.

"I know who gave him my number. Thanks, Bro." I lean towards him, he looks so jubilant, and I hit him across his head. "Next time a guy asks for my number, tell me before he calls me!"

He stands up bows and says, "Your wish is my command!" before walking out of my room. Now there's only Dad to deal with.

In the kitchen, Dad's making dinner. It's the one night of the week that he cooks dinner, thankfully! I lean against the kitchen bench working up the nerve to talk to him.

"What's on your mind, Kiddo?" I hate it how he does that.

"Dad, I was wondering if I could go out on Saturday with a couple of people from school." I wonder what he'll say when he actually sees them.

"Sure Kaila. It's good to hear you're making friends." He doesn't look up from whatever he's cooking.

"Ah, Dad, what're you making for dinner?" I'm trying to suss out whether or not I should order pizza.

The red bubbling mix doesn't look too appetising to me. Dad's cooking can sometimes be quite dangerous to eat.

"It is spaghetti bolognaise." I am definitely going to order pizza tonight.

After dinner, I sit by my computer in my room, waiting for Nat to come online.

Me: Hey what you up to Nat?

Nat-Girl: Nothing much, just doing some homework, and you?

Me: Haven't got any homework, dad said YES!!

  Nat-Girl: Cool have fun!

Me: Got to go I'm tired! :0

  Nat-Girl: Cya later

  Me: Sure

  Nat-Girl: BYE

I log off and climb into bed, waiting for sleep to come.
