  The Black Ants

  There were watchmen posted in the tower on the headland, where they had a view out over miles of the Greensea. At first sight of an approaching they would ring the tocsin, a bronze bell with a high, clear note, and everyone would hurry for the sanctuary of Teos and its wooden walls.

  The attack came over land, from the north, almost as though the raiders knew the weakness in the town’s defences. Nobody knew until it was too late.
