all of our calls and discussions, Wade closes the door to his office. He pulls out of his bag two sets of papers.
“What’s that?” I ask him. But I know the answer. In part.
He looks them both over, tells them apart, and slides one of them over to me. “Take a look,” he says.
…
“There she is,” Quinn says.
We pull up in front of Chloe and Wade’s building. She is standing there with a large bag next to her on the sidewalk. I jump out of my car and take her bag and dump it in the back. Chloe slides into the backseat behind me.
Quinn stretches her hand through to the back and Chloe takes it.
“How are you,” my wife asks.
“A little nervous,” Wade’s wife replies.
“Why?”
“I know I’m going to see him, and I want to, but then I don’t want to at the same time. Does that make sense?”
…
The four of us sit in the back row, and we’re almost the last to leave. Mary comes from the front, bringing the speaker with her. Quinn hugs her warmly and I allow her to kiss me on the cheek.
“Judd, Quinn, I’d like you to meet Rex,” she says.
“Mary has told me a thing or two about you.”
I smile and take his hand. “I think I can guess what those two things were.”
He smiles back, looks at Mary. “I wonder if you can…”
…
And then the stage is empty. The microphone stands alone.
Rex stands quietly to the side, looking over us all, looking for some sign. And he gets it. Quinn stands, lowers her gaze to the floor. I’m still holding her hand.
“What are you doing?” I ask her in a whisper, but she doesn’t reply.
Rex waves her over and she pulls against my hand.
“Let me go, Judd,” she says.
“Are you sure?”
She nods and gives me a little smile. I let her hand slip from mine and watch her walk slowly down the aisle between the lines of chairs. She stands before the microphone, says nothing, looks down.
I guess she’s praying.
