Chapter 11
Still under the cover of darkness, Holly and Trent made their way out of the abandoned house and to his car parked in the rear; the gravely uneven surface making it difficult for Holly to walk. She had no idea how long Trent had held her captive; whether it had been hours or more than a day. It was dark when he took her from the front of the building and it was dark now. Holly looked around not recognizing where she was. Everything looked so foreign and run down, so different from the upscale cosmopolitan neighborhood where she lived. Holly could hear a distant siren in the background, the blaring horn growing louder as if it were moving closer to them rather than farther away. I just want to go home, she thought to herself.
Trent moved to the back of the parked vehicle and popped the trunk.
“Easy or hard?”
Holly vividly remembered their initial struggle and the first time she saw the parked car with the trunk open; the panic, the sheer terror she felt not knowing what would happen next – fighting Trent with everything she had. Not wanting to relive that moment, Holly opted for easy and she willingly climbed into the awaiting trunk. Her heart rate began to increase as Trent slammed the trunk shut, not exactly sure if he would really let her go or whether he would change his mind.
Holly heard the car ignition fire, and felt the vehicle began to haltingly move over the uneven driveway. God please… just get me home, was Holly’s constant thought as Trent’s vehicle moved through the deserted neighborhood back toward the more populated midtown area.
He was pleased with himself; having accomplished everything he intended. Trent knew this would be a night Holly would never forget. No need to take her life… she really wasn’t worth all that aggravation. He was content to have shown her that he was not to be denied… on any level. Now all he wanted to do was drop the bitch off, go home, and wash her stench from his body. Trent maneuvered his car to the alley alongside Holly’s high rise, right where he had parked his car before. Trent turned off the ignition, got out of the driver’s side and walked to the back of the car.
Holly felt the car stop, unsure as to where Trent had taken her. She knew she hadn’t been in the trunk for very long, but was still unsure as to where they would end up. She prayed more intensely as she waited, hearing footsteps nearing the back end of the car. He was done with her, and was not the least bit concerned in Holly telling anyone. He knew her career and lifestyle meant far too much to her for that. And besides, the bitch wasn’t crazy. If I could get her ass once, I could do it again… no problem. Hell, I’ve done it before, Trent thought to himself, smiling vindictively.
Trent moved to the back of his car, popped the trunk, and watched it as it slowly opened; revealing what was left of Holly the executive. Holly peered up from the darkened trunk, watching Trent as he stared down at here. Hesitantly, Holly slowly climbed out of the mobile coffin that had encased her. Just let me out so I can go home… she thought to herself.
Trent didn’t speak. He stepped slightly to the left; allowing just enough room for Holly to lift herself from the trunk. Finding her feet, Holly steadied herself, still unsure if Trent would simply let her walk away. Her heart began to race again as Trent stared at her. He smiled.
And then he spoke. “Good night Holly. Tonight, my dreams will be of you.”
Holly didn’t respond. She just wanted to get inside her apartment where she could be safe away from Trent. Holly wanted to run, get away from Trent as fast as she could; but her body defied her – the pains of the last 48 hours wreaking havoc on her ability to move. Her mind said RUN, but her body said no. Trent threw her purse at her; tossing the keys and phone he previously held captive. Holly fumbled to retrieve her belongings, her keys and purse falling to the ground. Holly picked up her things, holding them close to her breast as though they were prized possessions. Trent didn’t speak. He just stared at her with a disgusted look etched on his face. She slowly and painfully began what seemed like the longest walk down the alleyway; looking back over her shoulder to make sure Trent wasn’t following her; the sounds of her own breathing and the clank of her stilettos against the gravelly alleyway making it difficult to hear if Trent was moving behind her.
Holly just kept moving; moving closer to her freedom; praying all the while that Trent would honor his word this time and really let her go. Holly made her way to the front side of her building, cinching tighter the sheet around her waist – the street still dark and seemingly abandoned. There was no movement, no sound other than the distinctive click of Holly’s stilettos on the concrete pavement. In the distance, she could hear what sounded like a car door slam and then the undeniable start of Trent’s car. Holly looked back again to be sure; seeing the luminescent glow of the cars headlights emerging from the alleyway. He was really leaving… he was really letting her go… Still, this was no time for celebration, Trent had deceived her once, she wouldn’t be deceived again.
Holly moved quickly making her way into her building, anxiously pushing the elevator button; impatiently waited for its arrival. She was still on edge; still reeling from the unspeakable things Trent had done to her. Holly continued to look over her shoulder at the buildings front door to see if Trent had changed his mind, double-backed and would come after her again. Come on… come on… Holly said softly encouraging and willing the inanimate elevator to respond. Please… please… please come on… shifting her weight from one foot to the other; anxious for the elevator to arrive. And then she heard that old familiar ding announcing the elevator’s arrival – a sound she had taken for granted so many times in the past but was so grateful for now. The elevator door methodically opened in front of her; Holly’s eyes misting – her body still tensed and on high alert. The elevator doors had barely opened before Holly quickly rushed inside. The doors couldn’t close fast enough for her. She repeatedly pushed # 21 encouraging the door to close faster, praying no one was coming. On cue, the door began to close. Holly breathed a little easier but she knew she wasn’t totally out of the woods yet. Trent knew where she lived. He knew her apartment floor, the apartment number. But Holly couldn’t think about that now. All she wanted to do was get inside her apartment where she would be safe. As the elevator ascended to her floor, the tears again began to fall…Holly did nothing to stop them.
Chapter 12
A low ethereal glow began to illuminate the sky as the sun began to rise in the east; casting new shadows. Dawn was breaking as Holly slowly made her way down the long, empty hall and into her apartment. Holly heard a noise behind her. She gasped and stopped dead in her tracks. She wanted to look behind her but was afraid to do so. What if it was Trent, What if he really did double back, changed his mind – decided he wanted to finish her off? Holly wanted to run but her feet wouldn’t move. Against her better judgment, she decided to look behind to be sure. Slowly, deliberately, Holly turned her head looking over her shoulder; heart racing, her feet not moving – still frozen to the carpeted hallway floor. Through cloudy eyes, Holly could make out one of her neighbors at the end of the hall coming out of their apartment. Holly exhaled. Compelling her feet to move, she hastily walked the short distance to her apartment door. Hands shaking, she opened the door and as soon as her body cleared the entrance, Holly closed and latched the door securely behind her. Holly breathed a sigh of relief as she slid down the inside frame of the door, landing softly on the floor.
Holly sat there… still…
She lost all control of the pent up emotions she had inside her. Her tears were not just tears of sweet relief for getting home safely, the tears Holly now shed were filled with resentment, hurt and pain.
How could he do this to me? Holly thought, crying… then screaming…
“HOW COULD HE DO THIS TO ME!?!?!?”
“HOW COULD HE DO THIS TO me…”
She sat there for a while, a long while… allowing herself to feel every emotion…all the hurt, the sadness, the feelings of betrayal and deceit.
As the tears subsided, Holly began to f
eel a new emotion. She was angry; angry for what Trent had done to her; angrier at herself for allowing him to trick her into believing he was different… different than the others…even better than the others…
The anger in Holly grew. The more she thought about it, the angrier she became; her reddened eyes intensifying, her nose flaring slightly, teeth clenching. Angrily wiping the tears from her tear streaked face, Holly decided she was through with crying. It was someone else’s turn now…
He won’t get away with this… he can’t get away with this…that’s a promise.
