High Fidelity
a Christmas flash
by André Jute
There was in that house a strict darwinian hierarchy of cats.
Study Cat was the senior, most privileged cat. She was permitted in the master’s study, was picked up and petted, and wrapped up in his angora blanket with only her head sticking out, tickled under the chin, permitted to lick his nose and reassured that he wouldn’t trade her in for a little black dog.
Under-Study Cat lived on the landing below the master’s study. She was not permitted into the study. She had to wait for dead cat’s shoes.
For Study Cat lived dangerously. The master’s music was played on QUAD electrostatic speakers with 5500 volts on the elements. Because of the elevated taste of the master, and his fine discrimination, the sound was not muffled by any of the protective features of the speakers. Any cat that came too near would be fried.
Of course, cats just love the crackle of electrostatic energy and usually have some on their fur. When this fur-electricity on the cat is of opposite polarity to the film-capacitor electricity of 5500V volts on the elecrostatic loudspeaker and the cat comes too close… Mmm, on Christmas, do you don’t really want to know what happened?
Anyhow, congratulate Under-Study Cat on her elevation to Study Cat, and the new kitten from the stables out the back who has moved up to the landing under the study, the new Under-Study Cat looking longingly for dead cat’s shoes.

Times Literary Supplement
Andre Jute's Iditarod is the finest piece of fiction that I have read about The Greatest Race on Earth. Packed with adventure at every turn, nail-biting suspense, touches of endearing humor and the fine, subtle thread of romance, this tale speaks to what readers crave.
