Uncle Mac lived with his wife in the city. They both drove a taxi for a living. But he often brought the children out to visit their grandmother.
They ate pie together and Faith learned all about life on Kappa and on the farm. They produced animal-friendly eggs and milk products. They were a certified “Friendly Farm”, meaning the animals were well cared for and kindly managed. They were treated more like pets than farm animals. Four times a year, their farm was inspected and the animals’ happiness levels were tested using a non-invasive, brain- scanning device. Faith found it all so interesting! She would get to help take care of the animals. And she wouldn’t have to go to school. Their Grandma homeschooled Aunt Tanya’s children and would homeschool her, too. Faith felt so safe and so loved.
Then the children went to play outside in the farmyard and Faith went with them. It was evening and the sun turned the clouds pink in the purple sky. Fisher came to stand with her.
“It’s beautiful here,” she mused. “I feel like I’m home.”
“I like it, too,” he said. “I’m going to live in the city with Uncle Mac.”
Their blue eyes locked.
“But we just found each other,” she protested. “I don’t want to lose you!”
“You’re not losing me,” he reasoned. “Uncle Mac comes to visit here all the time. We’ll see each other lots...I just have to be in the city!”
Her eyes filled with tears and she looked away. Fisher caught her hand.
“I love you, Faith. I won’t go if you tell me not to.”
Faith threw her arms around her brother.
“I love you, too!” She squeezed him tightly. “It’s okay,” she said finally, “as long as you come to visit.”
“Of course!” He squeezed her back and they parted.
It was true; Uncle Mac did visit often. It was only two days later when Faith saw Fisher again. She was in the barn feeding chickens when he came in carrying something behind his back.
“Fisher!” she cried, rushing over to him.
“Look what I’ve brought you,” he said, pulling a fluffy, grey bundle from behind his back.
The little kitten flew the distance between them and hovered in front of Faith.
“Oh! It’s Lucky!” She caught the little kitten in her arms.
“Yup,” said Fisher. “I found him for you.”
“Thank you!” she said, stroking the little cat as they walked out of the barn together.
“It’s the least I could do,” said Fisher, “to thank you for saving my life.” He grinned at her. “I’ve been meaning to ask you, what really happened? What did you do? How did you manage it?”
“I heard a voice in my mind,” she related, “telling me to take hold of you. When I was able to reach you, I grabbed onto you and yelled, ‘No!’ Then all the guards fell over.”
“Hmm...,” Fisher mused. “Did you know that every single security guard in the spaceport was unconscious for almost 24 hours?”
“No, I didn’t!” Faith gasped.
“What kind of voice was it?” asked Fisher.
“I don’t know. I just called out for help and...,” Faith’s eyes widened.
“What?” asked Fisher.
“You don’t suppose it could have been...God?”
Fisher shrugged. They looked at each other for a long moment.
“But I am wondering if it might have been,” he admitted.
“Maybe we should talk to Grandma about it, together,” suggested Faith.
Fisher nodded and together they walked back towards the farmhouse.

Chapter 1 - Introductions
Fifteen-year-old Jia had been watching him for the last few days. She had her long black hair in a braid down her back, and she was wearing her travel clothing. Jia had come a long way to find him. Her brown, almond-shaped eyes focused on Fisher intently. She knew he had suffered the same thing that she had and was now facing the same prejudice. He was only a little older than she was and, so far, he had not done anything mean. But, still, she wondered if she could trust him. She was standing across the narrow street from him, watching intently.
He stopped walking and just stood there on the sidewalk. Old, low buildings with metal roofs lined the street. It was the heat of the day and not many people were out in the city. Kappa was the hottest habitable planet in their solar system, the planet closest to the sun. Why is he just standing there?
“I can hear your thoughts, you know. I know you know that I’m a telepath. So what’s the deal already?”
Jia startled. The youth with pale blond hair and striking blue eyes was looking in her direction. She looked down in alarm. But no, she still saw the semi-transparent, faded version of herself. To everyone else, she was invisible. Is he talking to me?
“Yes. I’m talking to you.” Fisher paused and looked around. “So you’re invisible. Well. That makes sense. I was wondering where you were. Why don’t you come out and we’ll talk?”
Jia held perfectly still. He doesn’t know where I am. I can still get away.
“Yeah. You can get away. I’m not going to try to stop you.” He shrugged. “But then you’ll never get to ask me. I can tell you want to ask me something. That must be why you’ve been following me around.” He scanned the area again and was quiet for a moment as a couple of kids passed by on the sidewalk. “So what do you want to ask?”
The question came to her mind before she could stop herself. What happened to your mother? Jia bit her lip. This was going too fast. She wasn’t sure if she could trust him yet!
“My mother?” Anger washed over his face and then began to fade. “Look,” he said more quietly, “this isn’t a conversation that we should be having here. Follow me if you really want to know.”
He started walking. Jia hesitated. How could she know it was safe? Where was he going?
“I always wanted to be invisible. I mean — really invisible,” said Fisher. “I can cloak myself, but that’s just a talent I have that messes with other people’s minds. People can’t see me but I still show up on recording devices and life sign scanners.”
Still Jia said nothing. She followed, but farther away. He wouldn’t catch her off guard.
“It really is okay,” he said more loudly. “We’re going back to my Uncle Mac’s place. That’s where I’ve been living since I came to Kappa with my sister four months ago. It’ll be safe to talk there.”
Jia just couldn’t stand it anymore. She craved company after spending so much time invisible and alone. And he seemed nice, even in the way he spoke to her. Jia materialized on the sidewalk beside him.
Fisher startled and stopped walking.
“Whoa! Don’t do that to people.” He put his hand on his chest. “You almost gave me a heart attack.” Then he smiled, his blue eyes dancing with merriment. “So, nice to finally see you.”
Jia smiled too and then she looked away. “I’m Jia.”
“I??
?m Fisher. But I guess you already knew that.” They started walking.
Jia nodded. She glanced at him again. He was still looking at her and smiling.
“We’re almost to my uncle’s place. It’s just up there.”
“So…do you have a girl friend?” Jia blurted. What a dumb thing to say! Oh, why did I say that?!
He regarded her seriously for a moment, as they continued to walk. “No.”
“Why not?”
“I’m not going to do that.”
“Do what?”
“Date a bunch of people. Seems pointless to me. I’m going to wait until I find the right girl first. Or until I think I’ve found her, anyway. Then I’ll court her for a short time and then, hopefully, marry her. But it seems like a waste of time to start looking for Mrs. Right when I’m only sixteen. You can’t get married until you’re eighteen…so…what’s the point?”
“That’s a different way of looking at things. You’re kinda old-fashioned…”
“I don’t mind being old-fashioned.”
“Oh I didn’t mean it’s a bad thing…Don’t you feel lonely?” She had to look at him. Jia just couldn’t stop herself. Too bad his smile was gone now.
“Lonely? No. I have my sister, Faith, and my uncle, and the rest of the family…and I have God.”
“God? You have God?”
“Yeah. I believe in God and I know that he loves me. I can feel it.”
She just looked at him. What an unusual boy he is.
“Thanks.” Fisher grinned at her.
Immediately, Jia felt foolish. He’s a telepath. He can hear every thought that I think!
Fisher only grinned wider. Jia turned away to look at some nearby trees.
“Here we are. This is Uncle Mac’s place.”
Fisher stopped outside the house, eyes on the door. It was ajar. “You’d better go invisible. This isn’t right.”
Instantly, Jia blinked out of sight. Fisher seemed to disappear, too. But Jia was able to discern a faint haze where the boy had been.
“Stay back,” Fisher whispered. He flung the door open and then ducked to the side. The heavy wooden door hit the wall inside the house. There was no other sound.
The haze that was Fisher moved into the entranceway. Jia hazarded a peek into the house. The furniture inside had been tossed about. But she didn’t see anyone. Without a sound, Fisher went inside. Jia followed the translucent smear that marked Fisher’s location. Carefully, she stepped over a broken lamp. He led her through the living room.
“Uncle Mac!” Fisher became fully visible again and rushed to a blond man lying on the kitchen floor. He was struggling to get up, holding his head.
“Fisher…they took the girls. I don’t know how they found us but they took my children!”
“How long ago?”
“I don’t know. Someone hit me on the head.”
“Where’s Aunt Edith?”
“She’s at work.” The man righted himself with Fisher’s help. Then he sat down heavily on a chair. He leaned an elbow on one knee and rested his forehead in his palm. “It was the Black Empire, Fisher. They took my girls. I just…I don’t even know where to look or what to do.”
Fisher rested a hand on Mac’s shoulder but then spun toward the door, a wild look on his face. “My sister! If they found us, they might have found Grandma too. Then Faith and my other cousins will be in danger!”
Uncle Mac stood. “We’ve got to get to the farm!”
