“So where can we take you my friend?” Eshi turned to Hamric. “After saving our lives and Yamsis, I will give you passage anywhere you like.”
“Rome.” Hamric said firmly. “Rome, or as close as you can get to her. We have business there.” Tye’s ears pricked up at this. Rome was a place that he had heard of!
“Rome eh?” Eshi scratched his thin beard. “Well it is not a good place for Phoenicians right now. If I am caught in their waters, being put in chains and manning an oar is the least that would happen to me.”
“So you won’t do it?” Hamric raised an eyebrow.
“I didn’t say that!” Eshi grinned. “Didn’t I say I was a smuggler! I can get things into dangerous places as well as get them out!”
“Good,” Hamric said and gave a rare smile.
“Er, Eshi?” Tye asked, noticing something on the horizon.
“Yes lad?” Eshi was still looking at Hamric and not really paying attention to Tye.
“You know when you said the Pirates boarded you?”
“Yes,” Eshe answered, still a bit distracted.
“Did they board you from another ship?”
“Yes, they did. It was a big galley, with a double deck of oars. Even if we had been on the run, I am not sure that we would have outrun them.”
“Did it have a red sail as well as two banks of oars?” Tye continued, a bad feeling growing in his stomach.
“Why lad, yes it did, now I come to think of it. Why?” Eshe and Hamric had by now turned round and were looking at Tye intently. But he was staring over the prow of the ship in a growing horror.
“I think it might be coming towards us!”
