  Tight Squeeze

  You think you're tough,

  And you think you're mean,

  I've heard you brag,

  You're a fighting machine,

But if you mess with me,

  So help me Hanna,

  I'll squeeze every one,

  Of your bananas.

  The Wrong Day

  It seemed things were improving,

And that it would be all right,

For I was beginning to see the sun,

Over the darkness of the night,

  And I was totally convinced,

That things would go my way,

  But then I soon discovered,

It was only the wrong day.

  The Vampire

The vampire's teeth missed my neck,

  And sank into my arm,

She was taking out my blood,

And it seemed to do no harm,

But she took so much blood,

I felt weak in the knees,

Was I giving all my blood,

  So this creature could breath,

But with cotton and a little gauze,

And tape to hold it on,

  She said, "Ok, that's enough,

Now you can go on home".

  The Truth

The truth is like a puzzle,

  Composed of many parts,

That fit to form a picture,

  A masterpiece of art,

And when a piece is moved,

  In order to disguise,

No longer will you have the truth,

But only a patch of lies.

  The Text Message

  I'm replying to the text,

  That you sent me today,

  Your words are really sweet,

And you want me to stay,

  Your message says you'll change,

Into the man I want to see,

But are your words really the truth,

Or merely text on my smart phone screen?

  The Gas Can

  The man was filling,

  A plastic gas can,

  So stained with grease,

  I asked the man,

  "Why put new gas,

  In that nasty old can?"

  "It's fine on the inside",

  He said with a grin.

  The Deceiver

  Time is a deceiver,

It does not want you to know,

  That you're going faster,

Than you really want to go,

So let it be no surprise,

  When your race is run,

  You were only getting ready,

  For what's about to come.

  Thank You

This was the last of many,

  Of my morning chores,

  Filling the hummingbird feeders,

Hanging on our covered front porch,

Then I retreated to the bedroom,

To get ready for the day,

  And outside the open window,

  A hummingbird peered my way,

He looked at me with purpose,

Like a good old friend of mine,

And he had come to thank me,

For the food I'd left behind.

  The Spider

  Spider spin,

  Thy sticky web,

  To catch thy prey,

  On which you're fed,

  And when thy victims,

  Meet their doom,

  Quickly enter,

  Into the room,

  Then wrap them up,

  Store them away,

  And save them for,

  A rainy day.

  Proud

  It made me proud,

  To hear these words,

  My mother said to me,

  "Son, I'm proud,

  Of the man,

  You turned out to be".

  One Of Those Days

This has been one of those days,

  I never want to repeat,

And as the sun is going down,

I'm half dead on my feet,

But if you wonder why I'm smiling,

  I wanted you to know,

  I hardly ever have,

Two bad days in a row.

  Moods

  I'm never really happy,

  But I'm hardly ever sad,

  I'm somewhere in the middle,

So I guess that's not too bad,

Without mood swings to the left,

Or mood swings to the right,

My mood is always quite the same,

And to me that seems all right.

  Lies

  I am like a bloodhound,

When it comes to smelling lies,

  And size doesn't matter,

From the ground up to the sky,

And if a lie fools everyone else,

  Fooled, I'll never be,

For I can trust the nose on my face,

For it has never fooled me.

  If I Were You

  If I were you,

I would have said it like you,

  And if I were you,

I could feel it like you,

  And if I were you,

I could see it like you,

  And if I were you,

Your thoughts would be my thoughts,

  And although I can empathize,

  I am not you.

  I Can Live With

I can live with breaking up,

With my only high school flame,

And I can live with serving in Vietnam,

Though we returned to scorn and shame,

And I can live with Daddy's dying,

Though his last word was my name,

And I can live with Mother's passing,

But life will never be the same,

And I can live with all these sorrows,

  Until my days are through,

But I don't believe I can live with,

  Living without you.

  Flight

I love the sound of jet planes,

  Flying overhead,

And I love the sound of hummingbirds,

  As there're being fed,

And I love to see the eagles soar,

  In a cloudless sky,

And I love to hear the cawing crows,

  As they're flying by,

And I love the flight of Superman,

As he makes that whooshing sound,

For I love the fact, they are free,

And not to this earth abound.

  Experience

  Experience can be a prisoner,

  Locked up in a cell,

  Only opened by the keys,

Of what we do and tell,

And even if no one listens,

As you would like them to,

Go ahead and open the cell,

By what you say and do.

  Everything I Need

  I'm in need of nothing,

  Except my daily bread,

  My heart carries no worries,

  For anything done or said,

And my mind has no desire,

  For money, power, or lust,

For I have everything I need,

  I have my Father's love.

  Death

  Death is all around me,

  And I can't get away,

The grim reaper has set up shop,

  And making plans to stay,

Oh, God I pray that tomorrow,

  Will bring a better day,

For death is all around me,

  And I can't get away.

  Deadly Combat

  One hundred pounds of muscle,

And one hundred pounds of fat,

  Were battling one another,

In a game of deadly combat,

The fat sat on the muscle,

And to death, it tried to smother,

But the muscle pushed off the fat,

In a bench press like no other,

Then the muscle squeezed the fat,

And made it squeal like a pig,

But the fat began changing shapes,

First like an apple and then like a fig,

  This maneuver confused the muscle,

And it missed every time it grabbed,

So the fat was growing confident,

That the muscle was his to be had,

But a skeleton came out of the closet,

Wielding a big club in his hand,

Striking the muscle and then the fat,

Until both of them were dead,

Then the skeleton returned to the closet,

And put on his derby hat,

And waited for the next round,

In a game of deadly combat.

  Hoagie

  Hoagie the frog,

  Lived in a drainpipe,

  It was the perfect size,

  For him,

  And when it rained,

  It filled the drain,

  Then Hoagie could go out,

  And swim.

If I Live To Be One Hundred

If I live to be one hundred,

  I’ll outlive everyone else,

No one will attend my funeral,

  Except maybe for myself,

And not one sole will be there,

  To cry and carry on,

But I pray that they will show up,

  To welcome me back home.

  The Vase From Trinidad

As Director of the city museum,

  Anticipations he often had,

But none as great as the arrival,

  Of the Vase from Trinidad,

For his museum to have acquired this piece,

And have it boldly on display,

By all accounts would make him,

The Museum Director of the decade,

Carefully he opened the velvet-lined case,

And was taken aback with awe,

For tiny figures etched over the vase,

Depicted a story of rise and fall,

And as he turned the piece around,

  He cut his finger somehow,

But he wiped his blood from the vase,

With a clean white paper towel,

To experience an incident as daunting as this,

  Left him completely dismayed,

So he instructed one of his assistants,

To put the valuable vase on display,

  But his misfortune would continue,

Leaving too little pride to swallow,

For the Museum Director went missing,

On the very next day that followed,

The detective assigned to the case,

Called it the toughest he’d ever had,

But he never examined the figures,

  On the Vase from Trinidad.

  Glasses

If you’ve never been lucky enough,

To have ever worn a pair,

Take it from a person who has,

And the following I will share,

In my youth they called me four eyes,

But that’s better than metal mouth,

And I always take an extra pair,

  Whenever I leave the house,

And if I awake during the night,

  Without them I can’t see,

So I fumble around the nightstand,

  Wondering where they could be,

In summer they cut my ears,

Or slide right down my nose,

So I make weird faces to keep them up,

Wearers know how that can go,

  And when the humidity changes,

  From one extreme to another,

In ten seconds the glasses fog,

  Just like any other,

And they are expensive to replace,

That’s the way the story goes,

So I had the laser surgery,

And threw mine out the window.

  Poetry By The Letters

  Making your poetry rhyme,

Is as easy as one, two, three,

Get your pencil and paper ready,

  Then we’ll go from A to Z,

  A is for the apple,

  Hanging in a tree,

Now you choose a word for A

  Try not to copy me,

B is for the rhyming beat,

  Found in every line,

  C is for the cadence,

  Keeping everything in time,

  D is for those days,

You can’t think of what to write,

  E is for the editing,

You’ll do late into the night,

  F is for the friends,

  You’ll meet along the way,

  G is for the grind,

  You’ll go through every day,

  H is for hyphenation,

  You shouldn’t have to use,

  I is for italics,

Be sure to use these too,

  J is for justification,

Which I don’t recommend for poems,

K is for kindness in poetry,

If you choose words that are warm,

  L is for the legwork,

That you may sometimes have to do,

  M is for the materials,

And the type you get used to,

N is for the networks of poetry,

You’ll use in order to promote,

  O is for the opinions,

Don’t let them “get your goat”,

  P is for the paper,

And the amount you throw away,

  Q is for the quality,

Keep it high in every way,

  R is for the readers,

You pray that you’ll have many,

S is for that sinking feeling,

If readers, you don’t have any,

  T is for your thoughts,

Which you may not want to share,

  U is for the ulcers,

That will plague you if you care,

  V is for the variety,

Of the kind of work you do,

W is for windows of poetry,

  That you’ll be looking through,

  X is for xceptional,

And the words that you make up,

  Y is for the yesterdays,

And the number of coffee cups,

  Z is for the zipping,

You won’t do with poetry files,

  Now let’s turn ourselves around,

And go from Z to A for a while,
