In the basement, Joe looked at the two bullets under the microscope and her heart sank as her worst fears were realized. The bullet that killed Buck was in too bad of shape to match anything. Poor Jim, she thought. What was he going to do?

  Upstairs, Jim was stalling, trying to make Chet Green believe that they had proof of Bradley’s guilt. Over the radio, Jim had explained that he didn’t think the bullets could be matched and that he wanted to try a last ditch effort at getting a confession. She’d hoped that he was wrong about the damaged bullet and knew now that his stalling would fail.

  Green was weak, but not so much that he could be intimidated into talking without some sort of stimulus. They needed something to push him over the edge. You have to do something, she thought to herself as she bit her lip. Think! A moment later, her eyes narrowed and a mischievous smile appeared on her face.

  “It’s time to throw this bum a curve,” she said out loud. With that, Rissley grabbed another evidence bag. Leaving the damaged bullet on the table, she grabbed the other one, ran up the stairs, and out the back door to the shooting range.
