Jim walked out of the bedroom buttoning the shirt of his sheriff’s uniform. Nikki just finished pouring fresh coffee into a travel mug and handed it to him when he walked into the kitchen. Jim took a drink as Nikki finished buttoning his shirt.

  “I’m really sorry about the phone, Jim.”

  “That’s all right. I’d just better get out there and straighten this out.”

  “I’ve got to go, too,” Nikki said. “I have to report to work in a couple of hours.”

  “Maybe I’ll see you tonight, then.” Jim stepped past her and walked hurriedly out the door.
