Joe drove down the hill and came to a stop behind Jim’s Blazer. It had taken a lot longer to get here than she expected. She never liked city traffic, but that’s exactly what she just experienced. Normally, on this stretch of lazy highway, she felt comfortable enough to do her nails or put on makeup, but not tonight. It was both hands on the wheel, gas, break, stop. Gas, break, stop. Gas, break, stop.

  She finally got frustrated, put on her lights and siren, and sped past everyone in a huff. She didn’t realize she was still gripping the wheel so tight. She pried her fingers off it, then took a deep breath of relief, releasing it slowly. Grabbing the two brown paper bags on the opposite seat, she got out. As she walked towards Jim, she wondered what he was thinking as he stared into the sky.
