Read Under The Moon Page 9

“Being a priest might not inspire you enough so I asked a close friend of mine to share his story to prove that God woks in small everyday miracles. Students, families and friends, please give a hand to my dear friend John,” Reverend Jack introduced.

“Thank you Reverend Jack, but I would like to clarify one thing: I’m not a miracle worker here, okay?” John started to the sound of laughter. “Others would often refer to me as a successful businessman. My teachers and professors would say a loyal and trustworthy ally. These traits are what I have become, what I chose to be. When I was about your age — and I’m referring to the majority of this assembly, which of course are students — my parents look at me like I’m some kind of failure. I was never the son they wished for, nor was I loved. I am who I am now because of the person who believed in me and at that time, we didn’t even know each other. We just talked over the phone. She took the time and was very patient to listen to a young man’s frustrations and gave out unsolicited advice at least on my part. But in time, I came to actually crave for her wisdom and motherly concern. It was she who brought me back to God’s embrace and I owe her all that I have and I thank God for leading me to dial her number,” John continued to tell his story as tears copiously rolled down Alexandra’s cheeks that miraculously went unnoticed by those around her.

John left the stage amid the sound of warm applause and tears glistening in the eyes of each of his listeners. While another activity of reflection and soul searching was going on, Alexandra followed John out of the room and into the hallway.

“Why didn’t you call sooner?” Alexandra whispered softly.

“I was so tempted to! From the moment your daughter gave me her number, I knew and I tried to stay away from her because I loved you then as a son would love his mother. But it seems that forces beyond my control kept on pushing us towards each other and I can’t help but fall in love with your daughter. Please say that you won’t hold the wrongs I’ve done in my youth against me,” John pleaded with his soon to be mother-in-law.

“Oh John, all these years! I’ve felt like I have lost a son in you! And now, look at us! You really are going to be my son!” Alexandra couldn’t help but shed a few more tears as she hugged him close. “Welcome home John, welcome home,” she whispered lovingly.

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

MG Camacho grew up in Manila and started reading at a very young age. She loved the written word so much, she started creating stories in her head while playing with her dolls and Legos. It was in high school that she learned the art of writing and summer breaks usually means she's hunched over a manual typewriter she borrowed from her mother. Throughout the years, she has never stopped writing and used that time to hone her writing skills and now, even with a day job, she writes at every opportunity she can get: lunch breaks and weekends. On top of that, she still reads a lot and wishes she could one day quit her day job and write full time. She's also very thankful you've downloaded her book, making her one book closer to that dream becoming a reality.
