  #1 red shift: shift, due to Doppler effect, in spectral lines of object toward longer wave lengths at red end of spectrum as it recedes from Earth, with amount of shift proportional to object's speed.

  (2) solar system: group of planets that orbit around common star or stars, esp. portion of the Milky Way subject to gravity of our Sun, including eight planets.
