Read Vistaria Page 4

place to hide from this thing. Then he cringed in pain, as his head was hurting so bad he couldn’t even think straight anymore. The throbbing surely had to be a symptom of whatever the demon was doing to him. What on earth did this beast want with the organs anyway? If he couldn’t figure it out soon he would die too.

The day went by as if in slow motion, and every tiny noise set him into flight. He still had no plan to conquer this thing. Evening rolled in, and the neighbor’s dog started to bark. Zayne was convinced it was waiting for him, but he decided he wasn’t going without a fight. He stomped to the medicine cabinet to take something to keep him awake, as his mind complained a couple pills wouldn’t do the trick, so he took some more. Zayne had an expression of pure determination as he grabbed a ball bat along the way, and he lay down on his bed to wait.

Three or four hours later he noticed the hideous creature in the mirror, as he turned to face the glimmering image of the red haired woman above him. He was instantly awestruck by her beauty, even more beautiful than an angel. However he knew she was the beast, as he tried to talk, “You’re the woma…” The red haired woman looked at him in confusion that he was not asleep, as she transformed into the hideous beast right before his eyes.

At that moment the creature bit down on his forehead, as her bite seemed to paralyze him, and he could only lie helpless as a thin hot tube from the creatures mouth was inserted into his brain. The pain was excruciating, but the knowledge of what this thing really was, and how many people it has killed materialized in his thoughts as if he were about to perform the simple tasks of walking or talking.

Vistaria among the darkest of fallen angels whose punishment for its sins were twisted inside out, for all to see how evil they truly were, forcing them to hide behind a glimmer that allowed them to walk among the living without being noticed. Once among people they would pass disease and plagues to those unlucky to meet them, not unlike other demons that fed on the living, other than their choice of dining were the donors various organs.

Zayne pushed the wrangled thoughts from his mind, as he struggled to guess the tube had to be some kind of tongue, and this is how it reached the desired organs. The pain was getting worse, as he could hardly bear it any longer. It was like having surgery performed on you while you were awake, yet you could not scream or move to save your life. He didn’t know how long or why, but the creature stopped and vanished from the room.

Shortly after his friend Brody darted into the room, telling him that he would get him some help. He was on the phone with 911. “No…” Zayne breathed, trying to clutch onto his friend’s hand, and terrified to be left alone, “She’s waiting…” Brody took his friend into his arms, reassuring him that he was safe now. Outside sirens could be heard in the distance, as he watched his friend die in his arms, and through a gap in the window shades he could see a red haired female walk nonchalantly in front of the house. He had a funny feeling that something was very wrong with that woman, as she glanced over her shoulder ever so briefly at him through the small crack in the bedroom shades. Then he sensed he was hyperventilating, and he had never done that before in his life.

At that moment he glanced at the computer hoping it was still recording, as he could still remember the horrifying images from the previous recording that Zayne had sent him. It was the very same image from the photo of the newspaper, an image captured in the side of the dark van, and proof this unknown creature existed. Why had he not believed him? A chill inched its way up his spine, as the uneasy sensation of being watched invaded him throughout, and he turned his head quickly from side to side catching only a glimpse of the beast in a nearby mirror.

  It was waiting.
