I reached out my hand to her and she took it. The sun was setting over the Texas prairie and painting the sky a brilliant array of oranges, pinks and purples.
“Come on,” I urged, ready to help her up into the back of the truck so we could make love.
She shook her head. “No. I mean, yes, I want to stay here and make love with you under the stars right now . . . but I don’t want to go back to New York. This is where I belong; with you.”
I pulled her into my arms and to my chest, holding her as close as I could. I inhaled as deeply as I could. My chest felt constricted with emotions as my hand slid to the back of Thea’s head to stroke her silky hair before taking her mouth in the most reverent of kisses. It only took three years and the old man dying to get her back. I guess he knew what he was doing.
