the crunch of his boots in the snow. And then, as a curtain of snow parted, he saw them.
Half a dozen kids had surrounded one of the teachers of the public school at the far end of the yard. They hadn’t spotted David. He snuck behind one of their snow forts and looked again. Someone was yelling. It was a familiar voice. David snuck closer. As he moved closer David realized that the kids were beating up the teacher, hitting and kicking him. And the teacher was whaling his arms at them; helpless it seemed to defend himself. David stood up to get a better look and as he did the teacher turned and looked at him. David froze. It was Leonard. He had the saddest look on his face. His mouth opened slightly as he reached out toward David for help. Then he went down. David turned and ran.
