Read Witch to Choose (Heart of a Witch #1) Page 42

After a long while sitting at Tony Romo’s, I felt I had the strength do this.

I was going all in. Wow. Magic or not, I was going to find out what Donovan felt for me. I started my Mazda and headed over to Donovan’s house. I pulled all the way in his driveway because I was the only car in his driveway.

I parked and turned on my mirror and checked my makeup. And fixed the smears with some tissues and spit.

  Here goes everything.

I walked up to his house and I felt a knot in my stomach. I walked up to his door and I knocked three times.

In a few seconds, Donovan answered the door with his shirt off and he was only wearing sweats. He had been sleeping. I had one guy waiting by his door for me to come over with every light on and the other one was sleeping, his hair askew and only the blue flicker of the TV from the other room.

“Were you sleeping?” I asked nicely.

“Just after I made us smoothies, I totally dozed off watching this documentary on pandas. It’s amazing how mean and angry those animals truly are.”

All I could do was laugh. I was having a nervous breakdown tonight and this guy was watching panda documentaries.

I decided to relax and to just take it as it came.

Donovan invited me into his living room and turned on the lights. There were two full smoothies on his coffee table. That immediately made me smile.

Donovan sat on his couch. He was so tan that he must go tanning twice a day.

How much of this guy is real?

“I needed to tell you something.” I looked at Donovan and he was beau...handsome. He was handsome. The most handsome man I had ever seen. He had a heart to match and I needed to know if his heart was true because I just did one gigantic leap of faith—one I hoped I wouldn’t regret.

“Donovan,” I said. “I’m a simple woman. Now, meeting you, I realize we are much alike. I may not be as good looking as you.”

“I think you’re gorgeous,” Donovan said, cutting me off.

“Do you? Donovan? Are you really into me?”

“Why do you keep asking me that?”

I was quiet and I could hear a lot of silence go by. Finally, truth spell or not, I said to Donovan, “Because I’m afraid.”

  “Why are you afraid?”

“I care about you so much and I need to tell you a couple of things that might make you run for the hills.”

“Well, at least give me one of them,” Donovan said. “I can’t read your mind.”

“If I give you one, I will have to give you the other,” I said.

“Then tell me both,” Donovan said.

“The first thing I’m going to tell you might make you mad or you just might laugh me out of here.”

“Do you think I’m such a horrible person that I would do that?”

“No,” I said, tearing up. “It’s just my defense mechanism. Donovan, during this time we’ve been dating, I was also seeing another guy.”

Donovan nodded patiently like this was a typical thing he heard. Then he said something that surprised me. “Who is he?”

  “He’s a good soul. A hell of a guy.”

Donovan looked at me and he seemed surprised that I was giving the other guy such a rave review.

  “So what is your decision?”

“In regards to choosing the other guy or did I choose this?”

  “Yea.”

I said very softly in almost a whisper. “I choose this.” As vulnerable as I could be, I asked, “So what do you choose?”

Donovan walked over to me and looked me in the eyes and said in a monotone voice,. “I choose this. I choose us.”

“Really,” I said. I looked at Donovan and I knew I wasn’t sure if I was following my heart. Then I paused and got up and walked to Donovan’s front door.

“Where are you going?” Donovan asked.

“Outside, I need some fresh air so I can think.”

Donovan and I walked out to his front yard and stood by the big tree in front of the house. We stood on either side of the tree opposite each other. Maybe I was trying to avoid him or maybe I was just gathering my thoughts.

“I love hard,” I said to Donovan.

“Okay,” Donovan said, dismissing the intent behind my words.

“Are you sure you can handle it? Are you strong enough to be my man?”

Donovan looked at me and seemed surprised that I had the confidence to call the shots. I still wasn’t sure I was making the right decision. I should be a lot happier right now. My head was spinning no. It wasn’t because of a spell. It was spinning because I am human. This is a decision that I believe will alter my destiny.

I needed to leave Donovan’s house.

“Donovan it’s real late and I’m going to have to take off.”

  “Is everything ok?”

“Yes, I’ll give you a call tomorrow.”

I stood up and walked out the front door. I walked to my car and Donovan walked inside his house and didn’t wait until I left. I stared at my dashboard, and shook my head. I was tired and needed to make the right decision.

I started my car and drove aimlessly for an hour.

I finally decided to go somewhere safe. I pulled up the driveway and parked my car.

I got out of my car and walked to the door and I knocked. I knocked a total of seven times. The door opened and I said, “I don’t think we were done talking.”

Robert invited me inside and I never went home that night.
