Read Zombie Resurrection: Episode 1 Page 12

Walking through the woods was hard on them. The last time Mary exercised that hard was during basic training. After that, most of her in military work was the same as her post-military work.

Carolyn seemed to be in exceptional shape for a 50 year old businesswoman.

“How far is your home?” Mary asked Dexter.

“Well it is about an hour drive from here, so what is that, like sixty miles?”

“Sixty miles? You don’t expect us to walk 60 miles?”

“Well, not today. We are going to have to camp out,” Carolyn said.

  “Camp out?” Mary said.

Dexter laughed and said, “Now I know miss military might ain’t gonna have a problem with camping out.”

“I got a better idea. Let’s find a car and drive there. We left hundreds of cars out there when we went to the woods. We can find a car,” Mary said.

“That’s a good idea. Let’s head back to the road and see if we can find a car that will get us to your home,” Carolyn said.

  “I guess I’m outvoted.”

Dexter had led them about a quarter of a mile off the road, so they got back to the road.

They were about seven miles north of where the last commotion happened. They peeked through the woods and saw a few cars peppered throughout the street.

“OK, I don’t have to tell you all to be careful,” Dexter began, “but we are looking for a car that--.”

“Oh, shut up. Let’s go find something before the sun goes down,” Carolyn said while walking over to the road.

Mary followed her and Dexter brought up the rear.

Carolyn said, “I am going to that car and you, Mary, head over to that car,” she said, pointing to her left. “Dexter, you do something to make yourself useful.”

“Who put you in charge?” Dexter said to Carolyn.

“The same person who put you in charge,” Carolyn said back.

Mary looked in the open door of a late model civic. There was a lot of blood all over the seats. She looked and saw there wasn’t a key in the ignition. She said to herself, “I didn’t want that car anyway.”

Carolyn said, “No keys, but it is clean, you think you can hot wire a car?”

“Who you talking to? You’ve been watching too much television,” Dexter said.

“I’ll take that as a no,” Carolyn said.

  Mary laughed.

“OK, look up there. Looks like about four cars. Maybe one of them will work for us,” Dexter said while pointing forward.

The three of them started walking towards the cars, which seemed to be about half a mile up the street.

They saw bones and half eaten bodies on the road as they walked. The sun began its descent as they got to the cars.

They all got to the first car and Carolyn said, “OK you take this one.”

“The sun is going down. We are going to do everything together or not at all,” Dexter said.

  “That’s smart,” Mary said.

“Party pooper,” Carolyn said and relented by saying, “OK.”

The first car was perfect. It was a sports car and it was in perfect condition. There was no blood in the car, but there were also no keys.

“You do know that the keys may be in the pockets of one of these corpses we keep walking over?” Dexter said.

“We don’t need to take the sports car anyway,” Carolyn said. “What is it with men and sports cars? Next you will drop us off and pick up a young blond,” Carolyn joked.

All three of them walked by a station wagon. The back had two baby’s seats that were full of blood and had pieces of flesh flung around it. In the front seat were pieces of the mother and father snapping at them.

“This doesn’t look like just another flu season,” Dexter said.

“Here it is,” Mary said to interrupt them. She looked through the driver’s side of a mid-sized car. “The keys are in there.”

“But there is a half-eaten body hanging out the driver’s window.” Dexter said.

“The sun is going down. I think we need to do some clean up,” Carolyn said.

“This is so nasty. Let me find something to take this out with,” Dexter said as he turned around and looked.

“Done,” Carolyn said as she and Mary threw the half eaten corpse to the ground.

Carolyn opened the door and said, “Look, the seats are clean, all the blood is on the outside of the car. Let’s get going.”

“Hold on, let me make sure nothing is on the inside that could cause problems,” Dexter said.

“You sure you don’t want to look around for something to clean your hands with?” Carolyn said.

  “I like her,” Mary said.

Dexter appeared irritated. He looked in the back and didn’t see anything but an empty car seat. He opened the back door of the car and grabbed the car seat, trying to yank it out. The seat wouldn’t budge.

“You have to unbuckle the seat belt,” Carolyn said while snickering.

Dexter reached over to unbuckle the seat and felt a hard bite. He yelled and grabbed his hand back. Dexter saw the end of his index finger on his left hand was missing. He looked on the other side of the car seat and saw a dead baby chewing on his finger.

Mary ran to the other side of the car and opened the door. The baby screamed at her and started crawling towards her. Dexter grabbed the baby from behind, holding its head away from him, and tossed the baby over towards the other side of the road.

Dexter grabbed his hand from the pain. Carolyn took the baby’s blanket and wrapped it around Dexter’s finger.

They all stood there for a moment and Dexter said, “I guess this is the end of the road.”

“What are you talking about?” Mary asked.

“If you get bit, you will sooner or later turn into one of those things. They aren’t telling us that on the news, but the alternative press is saying that,” Carolyn said.

“But it may not happen,” Mary said.

“We both saw our co-workers. Something turned them into that,” Dexter said.

“How do you know it is going to happen?” Mary said.

“Well, I got a plan. Let me go find the keys to that sports car back there. And I will meet you at my house. Why don’t you two go ahead, and I will meet you there,” Dexter said.

“No,” Mary said. “I’m not leaving you.”

“Come on, let’s go,” Carolyn said.

Carolyn got in the driver’s seat.

Dexter walked Mary over to the passenger’s seat.

“I want to thank you,” Mary said.

  “You’re welcome,” Dexter said.

“You take care of my girl,” Dexter said to Carolyn.

He gave Carolyn the directions to his house and the keys.

Carolyn shook her head and started the car up. She drove on her way to Dexter’s house with Mary in the front seat.
